I've never been able to pin down a definition of "Arab." Some people say that if you're a native Arabic speaker, you're Arabic. My wife is a black woman whose first language is Arabic, though, and she claims to dislike Arabs. There are black people from her country who call themselves Arabs, though. I think the difference is that they've gone Muslim and she hasn't (in spite of my strong encouragement).

Because there are two ways to think about it. Arab as from Arabia and having the blood lines of people from Arabia, and Arabs as culture among groups who have adopted Arabic as a language and cultural tendencies.

When new Orleans was under Spanish rule they wanted to populate with more Spanish people and offered people of the Canary Islands passage to Nola. To qualify you would have to be a family. Man and woman and kids. Ships stopped in Cuba and some stayed there and the rest came to Nola as planned. Many settled in Nola and ascension and other river parishes.
