I have some podnas that trawl. Some for a living some for extra scratch and some for fun. Only way to make it worth your while as deck hand is to get on an offshore boat. They stay out 2-3 weeks at a time.
To make it on your own with a small boat you have to stay out a lot and have someone retail your shrimp. Selling to the sheds wont cut it.
If you really want to be a deckhand I'd get on an inland tug. Decks make about $125-150 a day. Work 14 off 7. With a good head on your shoulders you can be a captain in 3-4 years, make $500-600 a day.

Baw, if you’re serious I could hook you up with a few boats out of Delcambre, LA. They’re out till they’re full of shrimp or low on gas. Also, I haven’t seen a shrimp boat yet with what I would call plush accommodations. If you’re willing to really go below what I assume is your comfort level, earn a very meager wage, have no social life “in season”, and don’t mind painstaking boredom minced with back breaking work - shrimpin’ is the life for you.

What kind of engineering degree? You can probably get a rig job where you can fish in your off time. This keeps some good coin rolling in.

Why not just move to the MS gulf coast, there are engineering jobs down there along with shrimp boats. Best of both worlds, you get to get away from the ex and not have to live in nowhere Louisiana.

Go down to Cameron. Near the courthouse there's a Shell station with a Hunt's Brothers pizza. Look out back by the dumpster for a guy drinking a 40. His name is Rooster. Tell him you want to go fishing with him. He might even let you stay in his shipping container house. Get a buffalo chicken pizza at the Shell before you go.

I aint fricked w a hunk-a-pizza in a minute but thats not a bad hangover buster when you don’t feel like dealing with a fast food drive thru situation

From one North MS baw to another , there’s guys down there in La who have been workin on the boats since they could swim and know the business inside and out that struggle like hell. Stick to something you know. Don’t you have experience breeding labs ? Maybe a dog kennel is the right way to go ? You can move pretty much anywhere out in the county, get some land and get to it. Not trying to tell you what to do but lots of these guys know their shite when it comes to oysters and shrimpin and they all seem like they’re trying to talk you out of it.
I don’t know if you have kids but if you don’t there’s really high demand for Engineers in New Zealand if you’re really tryin to get off the grid. Christchurch and other cities there have been rocked by earthquakes the last decade and they welcome engineers and city planners with open arms and high wages to help rebuild. Sorry to hear about the impending divorce buddy.

You’ll need some calf high white rubber boots

They barely get enough to pay for their gas. Find something else

Not labs, golden retrievers. Probably half of the ones in the region are related to my old hoss
But yes you are right and this is a venting thread. But I am on the brink of giving up and finding something I actually like to do.
NZ and Australia are things I have legitimately thought about

Don’t do it. Grew up doing it and had my own boat for a couple of years. Some of my family and close friends are still in the business.
It seems romantic and free but the reality is high fuel prices low shrimp prices and meth heads for deck hands. Even if you start out and learn and buy your own boat you will make just enough money to make it through the winter to get a 90day loan to repair your boat and fuel up for the next season. I know guys who have done it for 50plus yrs that are struggling and one break down away from getting out!!!
I don’t know what to tell you to do but I can tell you don’t skrimp

I moved to MS Gulf coast about 7 years ago. I love it down here. Never would I want to be a shrimper though. They work their arse off and most for little pay and even less social life. Sounds like you are depressed divorce. Don’t make it worse by becoming a shrimper. Hope all is well besides your divorce.

If I ever get to the end of my rope, my arse will be mixing daiquiris for bikini clad tourists at a beach bar, not doing manual labor.

Move to the coast
Get an engineering gig and start saving
Work on the weekends with a charter fishing company
Learn the ropes for a few years
Buy own boat
Profit
