Well better this than what happened in Minnesota a few years back.

Yeah, just me with my peeps. Won't you bring four of your friends? We can feel on each other and sip on some hen. Who knows, one thing leading to another let the party begin.

This bridge deck is not being supported by that longitudinal outer member, its held up from the cables that are connected to both the top arch truss structure at the top and a beams that run perpendicular at the bottom under the roadway, just like sitting on a swing

This guys understands. This bridge is not in danger of collapsing from this failure alone. And I also agree that this repair will be "relatively" simple.

Had only looked at localized pictures before you mentioned this. I assumed the bridge was a big steel truss bridge like we have in Baton Rouge but its actual a cable-stayed through arch which changes how the loading on the structure works. While I do agree with you for the most part on a lot of what you said, I still think that it warranted closing for further inspection/repair.

I wonder how many bridges are actually just one too many cars away from collapsing?

Rural bridges near our farm had pilings that literally didn't touch the ground anymore, and we had 2 bridges shut down for almost 2 years. Imagine having to drive 20 miles to go 3 miles while you wait for the gubment to care about some country road bridge. Ended up having to split the farm into 2 parts.

The real question is, what caused this failure? I would cut a section out of the broken member (its not doing anything at the moment anyways) and have it strength tested. I've seen people commenting about the age of the structure and other bridges built around the same time that had similar material defects that caused the whole structure to be torn down and rebuilt.
I've also seen where they strengthened the bridge for earthquakes. This could have stiffened members that otherwise would have been able to flex.

Steel is typically not brittle and usually elongates and deforms when it goes past its modulus of elasticity and shears in two pieces. This break is still pretty square at both ends which makes me think it is a material defect.

I'd love to get a copy of the plan sheet they keep posting in a format that can be enlarged clearly. Those tables on the sheet would be interesting to see the values.

The lack of rust on it indicates to me that it's fairly recent.

It's a bit hard to diagnose this issue using small resolution pictures on the internet.

Steel is ductile and normally does not just snap. It is possible though, hence why I said 99% chance and also clarified that it is something that could have started internally.

I actually looked at the bridge on google maps before giving info and realized it isn't a pure thru-truss like one normally encounters in Louisiana, hence me mentioning it being a possible fracture critical issue. Now that we see where the break is, that member doesn't appear to be fracture critical since it is supported by cables and floor beams. The main truss is most likely FC.

My favorite so far is the poster calling people dumb and then saying the bridge shouldn't have been closed.

Definitely needs to be closed, but it isn't in danger of collapse as it is now. Biggest and probably most obvious questions is what event caused this? Something happened recently to start this failure.

Speculating, but there was a 3.1 quake in the area a couple of weeks ago, followed by a 3.8 aftershock.

You and I would barely feel that...but I think there's a fault line right at the river.

For comparison sake, the I-65 bridge just west of Louisville KY (aka Sherman Minton) was closed for two years because they found a crack.

Same kind of bridge too. Maybe the design depends on higher quality steel than what they were built with?

Your shitty preconceived opinions of this city have absolutely nothing to do with the structural integrity of a goddamned bridge.

A beginning look at the barge traffic that isn't moving.
This is just on one mile.

quote:

The U.S. Coast Guard said 44 vessels with a total of 709 barges are now in the queue as a 1-miles stretch of the Mississippi River remains closed after a large crack was discovered in the I-40 Hernando DeSoto Bridge in Memphis, Tennessee on Wednesday.

A waterway restriction closes the river to all vessel traffic between mile marker 736 and mile marker 737.
