Environmental permits would be my concern, but that should be a lot easier now than the St. James project.

Getting the permits was the easy part for Formosa. The activists managed to hold those permits hostage for 5 years after they were issued.

I understand that this is Ascension and not St. James, but I’m not sure that’s going to matter when the same folks will be a couple of miles from this plant. I think you have to go into this expecting local opposition. Hell, I think it’s reasonable to expect “environmental justice” opposition for just about every major greenfield project between Convent and NOLA at this point.

Hopefully Hyundai, LDEQ, etc. are better prepared to deal with it now that they’ve seen the Formosa shitshow play out.

HHI isn't going to get involved in American shipbuilding. They are dominant on the world stage excluding America and Europe, due to the jones act and whatever europe's equivalent is. Commercial shipbuilding in America is basically dead right now, and there's no evidence that there would be customers for the kind of operation Hyundai runs. They spit container ships out like economy cars. They could do that here with pushboats and dredges but the only customers would be US companies needing US flagged vessels. HHI and China have the market sewed up already for non-US flagged ships.

There is a huge push right now to fortify the US flagged merchant fleet. There is a hearing going on today about Trump wanting to charge Chinese flagged and even Chinese built ships seven figures per port call.

Makes sense. The movie Gung Ho with Michael Keaton is also very under appreciated.

Yep. Ascension spots are usually pointed out in rabble rousing pieces like this:

Sad that they always build these cancer factories in backwards economically depressed places like ascension parish

I, for one, agree. This should be built in the affluent Washington Parish area of sophistication so that I don't have to be offshore trash anymore.

Their cars are awesome. I wish they'd start making 3/4 and 1 ton pickup trucks.

Hyundai is partnering with GM for electrics; they may get a variant of Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon pickup soon.

There are some ICE delivery vans that Hyundai may bring to the US in a GM factory as well.

I want a 1 ton dually diesel Hyundai option.

I just don't see any of them doing the development bullshite for an EPA compliant diesel pickup truck, especially after the volkswagen and cummins arse rapings. That's a lot of risk for one country worth of sales, albeit a big kne.

Now all Hyundai needs to do is buy a Toyota engine plant (does LA have one of those?)

This may be the dumbest comment I’ve seen in a while.

Ascension Parish has the 4th highest median household income in the state.

You're obviously not familiar with El Goucho

And just so you know-

Ascension boasts the highest median household income in Louisiana at $93,800.

Great. More pass-through price increases to be paid 100% by consumers.

Awesome news for Louisiana and Ascension Parish! Hopefully they Buy America for the construction products needed and not follow the footsteps of the Air Products expansion.

I don’t think we have the materials to put out the large cargo vessels like HHI builds anymore. There certainly isn’t any yard or dock in Louisiana that could even dream of accommodating something like that.
