In that order. Durango would be #1 but I'm worried about never being able to adjust to the altitude/dangerous iced roads.

I'd strongly consider a nomadic lifestyle under those circumstances. Find a remote job and move around a lot to see the country/world.

I live in Colorado and go to Durango often…..I hate Colorado and would be in Louisiana in a heartbeat. 4 months of summer here and bitter cold the rest of year.

Durango is awesome and it doesn't take that long to adjust to the altitude. The icy roads can be wild. I rode down the million dollar highway in a blizzard with my awd Volvo station wagon and survived but good lord was it scary. Full grown 4x4 trucks were bowing out and pulling over.

For July, Durango has an average July high of 84°. That's only a bit higher than NOLA's October average. Relative to NOLA, Durango doesn't really have a summer at all.
But I totally understand the cold complaints. I was there in mid-May and there were still some park entrances that had a good bit of snow/ice. Durango is the prettiest area on my list, but it would definitely require the biggest adjustment.
I'm sure that you've already done so, but take the Durango-Silverton train ride if you haven't already.

Those conditions are my current situation. I left Louisiana for the Shoals eight years ago and it was the best move I ever made.
