HVAC Gurus: Makeup Air for Kitchen Hood... Let's chat...
Posted on 1/18/19 at 11:50 am

My AC guy tells me that by code, anything over 400CFM kitchn hood requires me to install a makeup air duct with a motorized damper.
Legit? if so, what's this going to cost me?
note: new construction

sounds about right, moving that much air out of a room to outside will form a vacuum in the house so to let it function properly you need a way to bring in as much outside air as it is pushing out.
why in the world are you putting in such a large vent? do you have a commercial stove and you are running a catering business from your home?
most standard stove vents are only 100-200 cfms max

Are you satisfied with it?

Get a vent <400cfm... problem solved

I didn’t install one for my 36” hood. Inspector wouldn’t finalize my inspection until I did.

Simply consult with your city inspector if you doubt him. Talk through it, including what he has seen as a remedy and usual costs associated with it. Don't wait until it's too late to bicker over costs or solutions.

My blower is 600 cfm. But I had it installed about 15 yrs ago in GA. Didn’t have a requirement for m/u air at that time. Varies by state.

It's just your basic Broan chimney vent.
Does the job and if anything gets really bad...there's a window I can open.

let me put it this way, exhaust vents that have dedicated incoming air vents to offset the air going out work great.
vents that dont have dedicated incoming air vents to offset the air going out struggle to work as well as they were designed to.
its not much of an expense for the results you get from doing it properly and not trying to penny pinch on something this important to keeping you kitchen smoke and airborne grease free

Mikey, your post was absolutely no help at all.

I’m not asking you if golfer is satisfied with his hoods performance, I’m asking golfer. Your snarky comments add nothing to this thread.

Yes, used to build houses in Texas - we had to do this for >400CFM. I don't know the difference in cost b/c I was mainly field side + no houses we built had <400CFM - so nothing to compare to.

my comments arent snarky, thats just you wanting to read something into them thaty isnt there
you asked for HVAC advise, i have 45 years experience in HVAC residential, commercial, and "some" at industrial level
but take advise from some randoms and have fun with that, i tried to give you the best advice for the best outcome and satisfaction, clearly you dont want it so have fun with that

i was asking for thoughts about it and you told me a) why would i need that and b) just get a smaller one. that's not what i asked.

Dont know what code says, but from a performance perspective it makes sense to me.

granted but both are questions that "should" be asked to give you an informed response to what "your" needs are
those details are important to know to give you accurate advise and not just "answers in general" that may be completely off from your needs
i have a very direct way of saying things that sometimes comes off as harsh, its just how i speak, it wasnt meant as anything but my attempt at offering good advise

Looking at a 36inch gas stove. What brand bent hood did you install?
