I worked CAT claims for several years...We went in behind hurricanes...tornados...hail storms etc...I did the auto side.

I did these as well, but on the property side. Worked them for about 5 years and had to call it quits, couldn’t handle the 20 hour days x 7 days a week x 6 months. The money was fantastic, but my personal life was a disaster since I was always gone.

When Katrina came through, most everyone went to New Orleans, I wanted nothing to do with that so I chose to go to Minnesota where there were tornados and I had enough work for months, until winter hit. That was my last storm.

There is nothing like the sound of 50 portable generators harmonizing in the morning. Just got cell service back. Still no power or Internet.

Morning baws.

New Tampa checking in. Just got power back after exactly 24 hours. Only lost about 15 feet of fence and fixed that yesterday. All in all came out way better than many and I'm thankful.

Morning Lanier

Best of luck to your area getting back to normal. I’ve kept my generator gassed and ready since I had to use it earlier for whatever that LA storm was earlier this season.

We got power back in Plant City about 4:30 this morning. No internet yet but the hot shower I'm about to take should make me forget about that for a while.

Interesting thread here regarding some of the damage from one of the tornadoes.

From Fred Gossage in the replies. Fred is a longtime met with great tornado knowledge.

quote:

Just a hypothetical here, not forming an opinion on the damage or anything, but IF this were to be rated an EF4, it would be not only the third (E)F4 in Florida's tornado records, but it would be only the third tropically-related (E)F4 in U.S. tornado records.

quote:

1961 with Hurricane Carla and 1964 with Hurricane Hilda are the only two instances in U.S. tornado records. You also have to go back to the 50s-60s for the only two official F4s in Florida records.

When I was in FL and GA for Helene we realized that many of the victims (who didnt have generators) had no way to make coffee. We had several people ask if we had any. We had a Kureg machine we used for ourselves and used that.

We plan to use a commercial Bunn machine that one of our team members doesnt use from now on. Kinda setup a coffee station. We are also looking at getting Starlink and have a phone charging\wifi area so people can connect with family etc.

Im kinda embarrassed that I never thought of those easy simple things that could make someones life a little better during a crappy situation.

Don't be embarrassed.

Most people think chainsaw and yard tools first for cleaning up.

I have never grabbed coffee or chargers either. I don't drink coffee so it's not on my mind.

Your ideas are great and will be appreciated.

Fun Story: the Publix here in Asheville actually opened up right after the Hurricane and allowed people to go in shop for food. They said that they didn’t care if people could pay. You could either leave some cash or just take the food as a donation.

Stocking Mill Coffee

Please RT and share.

Spread the link around as we are running a lot of gas to people and now food and cash please share this donation link as every bit helps.

It goes from our hand to theirs and there are no middle men.

Can use all the help we can.

Gas cans are a big need as they are scarce in the area.

Our shop has no power but a worker is there and is cleaning up if you’re in area and want to drop gas cans off.

If you’re on the I 95 corridor south of Santee SC, GA or N Florida I have a guy coming down that can grab gas cans if you can spare.

Ice is needed in that area. Our first stop needs medication to be kept cold.

We will be able to help but I’m sure there are plenty of others.

I'd be boiling water over a fire using charcoal or whatever debris I could burn, which I have done.

There are over 250 houses complete in our neighboorhood. Not a one of them has power right now. One of our neighbors, who has a generator, set up a gang box connected to her generator out in front of her garage for people who didnt have access to a generator to charge their phones and laptops. There have been 10-20 phones connected to that little table for a entire day at one point or another

In some cases "rooves" is still acceptable although I think officially it has changed from "rooves" to "roofs".

roof
/ro?of,ro?of/
noun
plural noun: rooves
the structure forming the upper covering of a building or vehicle.
the top inner surface of a covered area or space; the ceiling.
"the roof of the cave fell in"
used to signify a house or other building, especially in the context of hospitality or shelter.
"helping those without a roof over their heads"

Countryside area in Clearwater checking in… Cell service is fine, but no power. Charge the electric car to 100% before all this happened so using it as a giant battery bank for all the gizmos

Congrats on that, Lanier.

We used to also set our generator up out front with a coffee pot, and make Coffee. People without electricity love somebody to give them a cuppa coffee.
Inland flooding is strong, and many trees went down over electrical wires.

Glad to hear it.

I can’t help but ask . . . is that pool area ventilated under that enclosure? Don’t go killing you or your dog running a generator indoors after pulling through the storm largely unscathed.

Fence panels in Florida…

Seems all the installers use quick release nails for this very purpose.

I usually put back with screws.
