Why does the Hurricane Hunter use a turbo prop vs jet engine? Is there an advantage, or is it an older plane they see no reason to upgrade from?

Don't worry, I'm sure I'm not the only one that noticed the irony of that person further derailing the thread to complain about....thread derailment.

Not sure. I've asked the same question previously.

The turboprops are more tolerant of hail than the jets. Airplanes that penetrate thunderstorms have an increased chance of encountering hail. Additionally, the two types of airplanes used, the P-3 and the C-130, are especially rugged.

I know it doesn't get stated as much as it should, but thank you for the continuous updates to this thread, the original post, and all that you have done to keep the members of this board up to speed. You've helped thousands stay informed and undoubtedly saved others by providing real time info to make informed decisions about evacuating.
But I am curious. This storm has been a topic for what seems like 3 weeks now. If you had to put a ballpark on the amount of hours you've invested in research and updating this thread, where would you put it?
Again, just wanted to say thank you for all that you have contributed. Truly a selfless, noble example that I think everyone recognizes and could learn from.

Daryl better conserve some of that booze, or he's gonna have some tremors over the next few days

This image doesn't mean this is the wind speed at the surface. This would be like 6500 feet up. Still, it shows the power of this storm, and it could still gain strength.

Do we have a link for buoys to see what the wave height is?

There is a big feeder band rolling through West Palm right now. But no tornado warning yet. Just heavy rain moving WNW
