Slack, what were your opinions on if/when it’s track starts to slow? The wind speeds will likely get stronger as it churns over warm waters, but does a slower track increase chances it’s sucked out to sea?

The Euro has been crawling and still getting Dorian into Florida, but the ensembles that take it out to sea are even slower than the operational, so slower is better for now. I can't speak to when it was supposed to slow yet. I'll check it when the 12z models run.

I think people get hung on categories too much. Katrina was a nuclear bomb beast that had Cat 5 attributes and was freaking huge.

I'm not hung up on it, but Michael was more powerful than Katrina by nearly every metric. Stronger winds, lower pressure, similar storm surge. Katrina was obviously a much more costly storm due to the densely populated areas impacted. We're comparing a tiger and a grizzly bear. Hopefully we never see another in the gulf like either one- and we can throw Harvey in the ring too

Yeah, what I'm saying is categories don't tell you the full complexity of the storms. You could have a Cat 5 hit land but the damage impacts are not as widespread due to the storm being a smaller more compact one and likewise for a lower category storm that is massive in size with widespread impacts.

Categories don't indicate the inland rainfall and flooding potential. Surge only affects the immediate coast. Wind damage carries a little father inland but is really dependent on exact location of the center, and at a certain point just becomes a tree/power line gamble. But inland rainfall and river flooding fricks some shite up.

While not "hitting" the same place twice, Betsy was made two loops at sea. First loop was north of San Juan then it headed north and looped around Bermuda then came back south and scraped the southern tip of Florida then came up the MS river. I was a kid when it hit Baton Rouge and remember being without power for a while.

I think there's been talk about a new rating system that factors in all of the threats, not just wind. Problem is people have such a short attention span that they just want to know what category it is.

Worst hurricanes to ever hit BR

Ordered on a time line. The worst varies by your perception from the impacts you received.
