The real issue on the coast is they still have not recovered from last year. After all the flooding from the hurricanes we got so much rain in the winter and spring no time repair or strengthen weakened areas. The flooding may end up worse this year.
I spent a weekend last month around Beaufort/Emerald Isle.
Fort Macon SP was still recovering from last year’s storm.
Downtown Beaufort is in trouble if the water level rises 8 feet.

The erosion on Carolina Beach this May was the worst I have seen it and I have been here 14 years.

I sometimes wonder if Dorian didnt have the upwelling issue if he could have pushed sub 900mb.

Do you have any updated times? If Dorian is @ Morehead/Jax at midnight. Then when does OBX get hit?
About the same time, and in the shite for a few hours. Timing is really tough to say outside of overnight. More concerned with where the center ends up for the OBX, along with Morehead/Jax/Emerald Isle. It's that getting on the east side would slam a big storm surge (to levels not seen in recent memory).
Down to the south, good chance of hurricane conditions and some surge and freshwater flooding into the mid afternoon and evening.

I am hoping Cat2 is true
105 or 115 max winds aren't going to matter much in terms of impacts. High end surge threat for where and if Dorian goes West of. Surge still a significant issue for those who get an eyewall brush, no matter if a 2 or 3. Dorian is a big system now, the water is the primary concern.

Tornado at Emerald Isle this morning caused some major damage.

If not for the land interaction, as minor as it was, and the upwelling I'm sure he would have. Very healthy upper divergence, deep warm water. It's a positive feedback loop if there's enough heat to support it and nothing hampering the structure.

Keep seeing videos and pics here of these tornadoes spawning in the water an quickly hitting the land. It is like a military beach landing assault

Never thought id see solid EF-2's coming from a Hurricane...
Got an enhanced from the SPC on a 15% tornado probability along the NC coast. Only higher I can remember was when Ivan was rolling through the mid Atlantic and spawned a moderate but that was well after landfall.

BTW, for a lot of fails this spring, the HRRR sniffed this out yesterday.

TideWarrior, where are you located? I'm in Carteret co. East of Beaufort.
There have been 2 confirmed tornados already and countless warnings w these bands. The one in Emerald isle started as a waterspout. Not sure abt the one in Pender co.

Ivan and his tornadoes wrecked our hunting camp. 400 acres flattened of pine trees

Just outside of Chapel Hill so inland even though the rain is now here from the outer bands and the wind is starting to get 10-15mph already. No where near what you guys are about to get hit with. Stay safe.

I sent family to Raleigh yesterday, I'm here because the job requires it...

The Cape Fear River, Neuse River, Tar River, Cashie River and Lumber River are all expected to flood which means Dorian pushes water inland as these all send more back downstream to the coast.

I got a friend that works for a company contracted out by FEMA to access damage. He on stand by to head that way.
I was stationed at Camp Lejune over 20 years ago and we usually camp at Oregon Inlet every summer. Hate to see the area get battered every year now. the erosion will continue to get worse.

Checking in from Charleston (Johns Island). Very strong winds since about 2am which is about when we lost power. The rain and wind seems to be picking up slightly in the past hour or so

Duke, where are you seeing "storm surge levels like not seen in recent years"?
All our info is 4-7 ' of surge from Jacksonville NC to cape lookout. Florence was 9-13' and almost 30" of rain. It's become the new benchmark.
I'm just curious if there's another source if info I'm missing
ETA: I reread your post and understand what you were saying. Disregard
