What is really sad is that a lot of the average Joe type people that had owned some of those older funky beach houses for generations will not be able to afford to rebuild due to what will be substantial changes in building code requirements. Only someone that can spend a million dollars or more on a home or a condo developer will be able to afford to build. Of course it is all done to protect the public, the massive increase in property tax revenue from the new structures will just be a added bonus for the county.

The older wood beach houses were pretty much all destroyed completely.
So then the ones made of straw had no chance at all.

Once the area is rebuilt, the old residents will not be able to afford living there in a few years.
When these neighborhoods in Florida are reconstructed, they are built for a higher income class than was there before.
Gentrification by way of hurricane.
Happened to father-in-law at Port Charlotte.

All those pics are on the coast. The beachfront. Although horrible, it's what you would expect.
Not sure why the downvotes. You are correct.

That's the way it pretty much should be IMO. If you can't afford to lose your house then wtf are you doing living where you know a hurricane will hit it?
Not going to be popular but I have a hard time feeling sorry for these people. Don't build your home in a floodplain and don't build one where its not a matter of "if" its a matter of "when" a hurricane will damage it. Unless you got the fat stacks to rebuild without going broke or just buy a house elsewhere then don't temp mother nature.

I can’t tell if you are serious or trolling.

Most of the standing buildings in this image look blue . Hurricanes must hate that color

Exactly. Where are lower and middle class people supposed to live? Coast to coast the US has potential issues: the west has earthquakes and fires, the center of the country is tornado alley, gulf and east coasts (even inland) are more prone to hurricanes, northeast has blizzards. Where should we hide?

Damn. Prayers sent to all those that will return home to nothing. Crazy that just a week ago Michael was a tropical depression that could reach hurricane status on the way to the US and it ended up as the third strongest us landfall hurricane in history.
Where are you pulling those current satellite images from?

In south Louisiana? It’s hard to find an area that ISN’T in a flood plain.
