Huntsville, meanwhile, has been adding population at a substantial rate since the start of the decade. In those eight years the city has added more than 17,000 people. If those trends continue at their current pace, Huntsville could pass Birmingham in population in just six years.

Huntsville was one of only three Alabama cities to grow its population by 10,000 people or more since 2010. The other two are notably college towns. Auburn added around 12,300 people and Tuscaloosa added around 10,600 people since 2010.

In Huntsville, Mayor Tommy Battle told much the same story.

The Rocket City continues to be on track – in about 6 years, projections indicate – to be the state's largest city. But the mayor has routinely swatted away such projections. Huntsville remains the state's third-largest city behind Birmingham and Montgomery with an estimated population of 197,318.

"A lot of people ask me the question, 'When are we going to be the biggest city?'" Battle said. "I'm not necessarily worried about being the biggest city. I'm worried about being the best city. If you're the best, the rest of it comes."

I’ve lived all over the country and I thought Round Rock was the best place I’ve lived. I must say that Huntsville is pulling ahead. Absolutely amazing city.

I’ve heard this quite a bit. I lived in Madison in 2010 and now have lived here since April. The traffic isn’t that bad. If you want to see traffic go to a major city like Los Angeles, Honolulu, etc.

I actually saw a Cuban restaurant on 72 and Balch the other day. Kind of scared to try it out honestly.

You use the word “amazing” to describe a shitty town in Alabama. What’s going to happen on your wedding day, or when your first child is born? How will you describe it? You already wasted “amazing” on Gumpville.
