100% necessary. I know it now.

try taking a slow motion video of all of them around the feeder. You'll get a whole new appreciation of how they move.

I did with my GoPro...Makes it look more like a jousting tournament than jet fighters.

Best guess I have 10 or so fighting over 5 feeders. Takes them about a week to empty the feeders. They swoop and chase more than they feed.

How a little flick of the tail changes everything, or when they throw on the reverse thrusters and stop almost on a dime.
They're just amazing creatures all around.

If you ever see one hanging upside down and it looks dead, don't bother it......he's just napping.

Hummingbird torpor, another cool thing about them:

I had what looks like the hummingbird equivalent of a right tackle hoarding the feeder for himself.
I put out another feeder and sometimes have 3 or 4 on that one.

What is that town in south Texas that is famous for the number they get every year? It is like the last stop before they cross the Gulf, and they feed like crazy. I'll look for a video I saw a while ago and post it if I find it. It was unreal.

I've seen trees in Rockefeller Refuge black with them staging up to cross the Gulf. It's crazy. It only happens for a day or two. Must be millions of them.

What are you shooting with here?

Mind sharing the lens/iso/settings?

the pictures in the OP were taken with an old canon eos 90d dslr...i have issues with change

but today's are with a canon eos r7...i just received it yesterday, so i'm just getting to know it...but i feel like i've finally moved into the 21st century...i used an rf 100-400mm lens for these shots...i'm not crazy about the lens, but i'm going to try my ef 100-400mm tomorrow, as it's a higher quality lens...i usually shoot in either manual or shutter priority with auto iso and the widest aperture available for whatever lens i use, since my feeders are all in at least partial shade...

Fun fact: hummingbird feathers are translucent. The colors we see is light being bounced around inside them, like a prism

interesting! i guess that would make sense given the fact that the coloring changes or is not visible at all at certain angles...

I thought my traffic was dropping, and it has a bit, but I still have a ton. Probably 30+ this morning. Going thru six-seven feeders every other day.

Wow, that's great! The most I've had at one time was maybe a dozen...now I'm back down to 4 or 5 :/

I’ve only seen a maximum of two on a feeder. Usually there’s one that’s chasing up to six others away.

I still have 10-15 but I think it’s a new batch
There’s a lot more fighting than there was last week

Crazy. Had the same thing happen at my house. Stuck in the screen, but by the time I saw it, it had already passed away.

I put out a feeder Sunday of premix solution. Haven't seen one on it yet, but hear them all around the neighborhood.

I put it in the middle of my fence flowerbed. Do they prefer cover like a window overhang? Is it the premix they don't like?

I noticed hummingbirds feeding on tassel flies the other day and tried to photograph it but could not get them both in focus.
