Workers laying pipes in a southern Spanish park have unearthed a 600-kilogram (1,300-pound) trove of Roman coins in what culture officials say is a unique historic discovery.

The Seville Archaeological Museum said the construction workers came across 19 amphoras containing thousands of bronze and silver-coated coins dating from the end of the fourth century. The coins are believed to have been recently minted at the time and had probably been stored away to pay soldiers or civil servants.

quote:

Museum director Ana Navarro said the discovery Wednesday in the southern town of Tomares outside Seville is unique for Spain and of incalculable value. She said the coins studied so far bear images of emperors Constantine and Maximian, with a variety of pictorial images on the reverse.

quote:

The Romans began to conquer Spain in 218 B.C. and ruled until the fifth century.

Can't imagine how exhilarating it must be to make such a discovery!

Wonder how many of those coins belonged to this guy...

Workers will just have to find another place to lay pipe.

Am I the only one that would have been tempted to fill my pockets before reporting?

And the market value for ancient Roman coins just tanked.

I always say if I find treasure, I'm reporting it, but I'm stashing half of it away first.

Pretty fascinating that those things have been buried for roughly 1700 years. No telling how much stuff like this is buried and will never be found.

Even the stuff that isn't buried.

Like that story that was on the OT a while back about the person in France that went up to his attic to fix a leaky pipe and ended up discovering that a Renaissance painting was just lying around up there. Can you imagine being that person?

Come to think of it, the one thing these two stories have in common is that the people who made the discoveries were doing pipe work. I think my house may be in need of new pipes this weekend...

No. Not really. Ancient Roman coins are not worth as much as people seem to think, just because there are so many of them.

Wasn't there a stash of coins found at a demolition site in New Orleans a few years back? Seems like some people got arrested for taking some coins for their own.

In the 80's. I know the man who helped to identify them. Some are still for sale at Cohen & Sons on Royal St.
