Why the hell wouldn’t he do that?

Are you ready for him to be a woke insufferable douche? He will be if he goes to an academy.

He says military experience makes him more attractive in the job market…I’ll go with that. The romanticized vision of being in the special forces is what he’s seeing more so than learning a trade.

If he's smart he'll join the Air Force or Navy.

my understanding is that the military has cut a lot of the retirement benefits for new recruits. might wanna check into that because having an early retirement always seemed like the biggest benefit to me

how young? how much longer are we gonna be using snipers? seems like drones accomplish the same thing

Do NOT let him enlist as an 18X. Because if he doesn't make it (and odds are against him) then he becomes needs of the Army.
If he wants to be SF then he should enlist infantry and he'll eventually be allowed to try out for selection and will remain infantry if he doesn't make it.
18X contract is also at least 5 years instead of 4. And more than likely, he WILL be reclassed to something like bulk laundry, motor t, or food service.

Sounds like you did a great job parenting
Never discourage your child’s desire to serve - no matter the current political landscape. This Country is bigger than any one president.
I’d suggest doing so right after HS.

If he’s white he will be discriminated against for promotions, duty stations ,etc.
This is not the military I served in.Now the gays, transgenders, women are the favored group and he will always get the shite end of the stick. He needs to be aware of this.

exactly. what is the appeal of sitting in 1 spot for weeks at a time barely moving and having to eat/shite/piss in the same spot to maybe potentially eventually get a shot off?

Just as bad is that I think our military could end up pointing guns at US citizens in our lifetime. Where would the OT start in educating the young lad on the political dynamics of our times so that he could make an informed decision as to whether current causes are worth dying for?

Sounds like he should just talk to you.

I don’t think I’d want my kid enlisting, especially without understanding how much our own government resents people like us and the growing possibility of an engagement that would be in major conflict with her own values and ideals.

After the experience my cousin had, no. Not with the current woke leadership. He routinely tested higher than everyone else in every category, only to be passed over for others who often didn’t meet the criteria.

He can go to Kings Point and do the Strategic Sealift Officer program and come out in the Navy Reserves while making six figures working for Military Sealift Command

So what is his interest exactly? Pay for school, have an adventure, have a career and retire?

Go officer; If he decides it is not for him, he would have a degree to help his off-boarding from the military.

6 yr enlisted Navy vet here.
If my kid wanted to go, I’d only give my blessing if it’s the Air Force Academy route. Maybe Coast Guard Officer. Otherwise I’m saying hell no.

I’d say to get a job, learn a trade while at the starter job. Go into business for yourself doing the trade you learned. Run and grow your business. Live happy.

Coast Guard. Lower ranks have more autonomy and responsibility than any other service. And the most primo duty stations.

Only thing is the USCG doesn't fall under DOD.

It's actually improved for most. Instead of 50% (2.5% per year served) of base pay after 20 years they get 40% (2% per year served.) But now everyone also gets 1% TSP (401k) contribution plus up to 4% match. There is also an additional mid career bonus.

Most never make it to 20 years and now they can leave with something invested for retirement. Even if you make it to 20, that nest egg may be worth more than the additional 10% pension.
