Another scenario I have considered is that the reason she is trying to be so close to me is because she thinks the age difference will keep me from trying to hit on her, and therefore feels comfortable around me.

I think station in life matters more. If you're a banker or an accountant hanging out with a girl still in college, it's kinda weird. If you work at the tire shop and you're dating a girl in CC or who works at the hair salon, it's not as weird.
Meanwhile, if you're a banker or accountant who is 30 dating a girl who is in her first professional job and is 23, it's not really weird.
