Y’all ever see someone and know you could help but the world is so f’d up you second guess yourself?

I was walking out of the store earlier and an elderly lady came up to me clearly distraught. Said her car had to be towed due to engine block cracking. Her purse and wallet is in the car. She isn’t from here (south Louisiana) due to her accent and told me she was from Kentucky. She is here to help her daughter who is in a nasty divorce and needed money for a hotel room. She didn’t come across as a bum. All I had was $2 so I gave it and said good luck.

Did you think to ask her why her purse was in the framing car that was towed?
I’m calling BS

The more detail to the story the more likely they're making it up

If she scammed you it reflects poorly on her, not on you.

Just out of curiosity, did this occur in Lafayette near Costco?

I give to charities and then when asked for money, I tell the grifter to go to the charity for help.

You should have asked to see a pic of the daughter. So many missed potential opportunities here.

Yep. Right outside of Petsmart. She said they were at the Marriot and said they only needed $23 more to get a room. It’s hot as hell and that asphalt doesn’t make it any cooler. My thought process was here is all the cash I have. Good luck. Hope to score some good karma points.

A guy who appeared to have cerebral palsy approached my car at the QT gas station the other evening as I was backing out. Goes "sir can you do me a favor?" I immediately said "no, I can't" and drove off. He replied, "wow, nice guy, thanks!"

Felt like a POS for a minute, but I've seen shite like that play out too often.

I wonder if the police or motorist assistant patrol could be called to take her to her car to get the wallet. Idk. I’m suspicious of everyone now. I had a similarly normal-looking elderly lady hit me up for gas money at a Racetrac and when i gave her a few dollars, she bitched me out that it wouldn’t even cover a whole gallon.

100% a scam.

Dude, think about it. A cracked block is causing the tow but her purse and phone in the car? How did the tow truck get there? Who “called” it? Who paid for it?

If not her, why wouldn’t she have her purse and phone on her or not just go get it.

Why does she need money for a hotel instead of just borrowing your phone to call her daughter or just a ride to the tow yard to get her purse and phone?

Literally none of it makes any logical sense other than to confuse you and scam you.

She’s not a “bum” she’s someone who makes a living scamming people

It all makes more sense to me now how it comes across as a scam. In the moment it crossed my mind she would ask for my phone, which I wouldn’t have given to her, and would have called myself. It’s why I asked when do you know when to help someone. If I got scammed then oh well it wes only $2.

Another issue I would have. That's probably one of the more expensive hotels in the area.

A young lady in a dirty sundress came up to me as I pulled into a Home Depot parking space. She had a busted lip and a black eye. Didn't look like she had washed her hair in several days. She was crying and having a hard time asking for money. Looking ahead, I saw two young kids looking out the back window of a beat up old car, watching her. In the driver's seat was some guy. Couldn't see his face but I could tell he was smoking a cigarette and watching her in the rear view mirror.

I didn't have any cash, but I remembered I had a koozie filled with change in my console. I gave it all to her, maybe $20 in change. Told her to get her kids and get away from him as soon as she could. She nodded, still crying.

Simple. I don't ever help anyone in that situation unless I know them personally and they call me for help.

Likewise, I don't expect anyone to help me if I ever got into a scenario like this.

I've been cussed by someone for not giving them gas money in an albertsons. Had a gas can in hand, said they needed a few bucks. Sorry. Hate it for you. Figure it out. I've had to learn to swim when it seemed like I was drowning. You can do it too, I believe in you.

I'm headed there right now to offer her $20 for a bj. She'll be staying in the Mariott tonight.
