I spent a considerable amount of time in the Philippines for work and it’s the poorest country I’ve ever been to by a long shot.
Mexico is a five star resort compared to the Philippines.
I had a great time when I was there and have stories for days.

Alaska and Hawaii weren’t states yet, so The Philippines would have been the 49th state.
Also, I don’t remember a story of The Philippines almost becoming part of America after WWII. I do know that the Philippines was briefly a U.S. territory after we defeated the Spanish Empire, but they decided they wanted to be their own independent country.

Japan has a land area of 145k square miles and the Philippines have an area of 115k square miles. That’s amounts to an area a little bigger than the state of West Virginia. Philippines is clearly bigger than you think

Japan has 120+ so not much different.
With that said, I had a client who owned an outsourcing company who hired mostly filipino workers. He always said how nice the beaches and remote areas are but the inner cities were shitholes.

The guy that ran the territory was future President Taft. Taft took control from Gen McArthur, Taft believed the Philippines should govern themselves after a period of US rule.
He was really popular with the locals, because he went to Rome and cut a deal with the Pope. The US bought all the Church's land in the Philippines and the Spanish priest would leave. He then sold all the land back to locals at low auction prices and had US priest train locals to become priest there.
