Yeah and then you take the customer at his word, bring him your best price because you want this over with ASAP, too, then the fricker says "hmm, ok, another $1000 and we have a deal."

No motherfricker, you just lied to me then called me a liar by insinuating that I had extra room after you asked me for my best price.

The uninformed consumer doesn't know it's your best price though. All it takes is 5 minutes of research, and you can know the dealer cost on any vehicle you want to buy, at least new ones.

That's true except those prices don't Include minimum of delivery charges and doesn't take floor plan interest paid per diem on said unit

why would a consumer care about these? I don't want to pay for the cost of doing business.

also 4hrs to houston to save 2k+ isn't a big deal for most people.

I'm pretty sure if you told them piece out they'll get you the car you need.

If they're holding back, maybe. If I let someone walk I either knew I could land them on fat money or I had nothing left

You pay for the cost of doing business no matter what you buy or where so you better start caring. If you're saving 2k in Houston there's a reason for that, it's either equipment (see my post in dealer addendums I.E. Not buying true apples to apples) or dealer protocol on pricing. Everyone at the start is on the same playing field, if they add shite to the car at the dealer, they lose an advantage with savvy buyers. Not many buyers are savvy though

A) you're a buyer unwilling to settle for anything but the best price...and a BR dealer can't/won't compete; or B) you say you want the best price, but won't really go to Houston. Either way, the outcome has already been determined, and there's no sense wasting any more time negotiating with you.
For used trucks, Texas takes the cake on pricing, but if I'm spending $12k on a truck, paying $500 more to not make the drive would be worth it. Any more than that, and I'll gladly go eat some good Mexican food. I don't like haggling, and know what price I am willing to pay, so why waste my time with someone whose price is thousands more than the next guy?

I am not asking for ridiculously low prices, just something that I'd be comfortable paying. A 10 year old truck with 175,000 miles is not worth $15k no matter which way you spin it. I'd be curious to know from the dealership insiders in this thread what percentage of used vehicles bought go to auction?

Depends on the dealer, I've seen 60-70% go and less than 35% at another

that's why i refused to sale new cars.

When I sold cars, I 1. eventually only sold used cars and 2. only sold used cars, that I took in the trades for. That's the only way yo can make money as a car salesman who isn't' selling 40 cars a month.

That way I know I got some value on the trade in so we don't have that much in the car and I'm not going to whore the price out to get a deal. I'd sale 15-20 a month but make 2500-3000 a sale ("The dealership not me)

Also you can throw all that bullshite about MSRP / give me your best price if you're selling accord's or Camry's. You're going to pay what the frick i tell you to pay and you're going to like it because if you don't there are 10 people behind ou that will. Thank you have a nice day.

I also liked to sale infiniti's, the dealership I worked at owned an infiniti dealership. If you slightly imply that that the avg dude can't afford a 50-55k car in the slightest bit they wont' touch the price, 8 out of 10 of them. Mofos that buy nissans know they are poor lol. But insist that a dude buying a 60k car can't afford the payment and hey man, it is what it is, it's a tough economy it works. not everytime but it works.

Key to buying a car- always be willing to walk away.

Bought a truck last week.

Went one place and didn't like the deal I was getting. Dude jerked me around with rates and trade in value and crap for three hours but at the end of it all he didn't give me what I wanted.

Two hours later I had the the exact same truck and the deal I wanted from the dealership two exits up.

Don't fall in love with a vehicle and think you wont find the same on somewhere else.

It's all about the customer service. My dad has been buying cars from the same salesmen for 10 years and my brother and I bought out first cars from him. He knows us by first name when we walk on the lot even if we haven't been in a year or two, randomly calls us and asks us how we're liking our cars. He gets us a fair price from the start without having to haggle him and he makes sure we get our cars back from service ASAP. Even when he switched dealerships we followed him. That's how you make money in car sales, treat customers like family and they'll take car of you. Just what we've purchased from him has probably paid for his kids tuition but we don't want to deal with anyone else.

This is a great thread and it is interesting to see the cockiness of the guys in the business. Right now, the economy is good and 15M units will probably be moved this year.

I buy a new car every 12-24 months and I can tell that cockiness was hard to find a few years ago.

To people buying a car, never spend more than 30 minutes in the store. (They like that stupid term). Make 'em negotiate via email. They hate that shite and most of 'em have to use their personal emails address, but they'll do it. A little trickier with a trade, but you can still make it work.

Never purchase a single additional item from the F&I man. Have your OTD price finalized before you sit down.

Done and done.

Oh yeah, eff Toyota. They think their cars are so great and they lead the league in recalls. Any numbnuts that pays $1k off MSRP for a Camry is clueless.

I don't believe this. I worked for a judge who leased American for 20 years. He hated the vehicles but there were no German dealers in the parish, and he didn't want to upset the status quo. That
dealer took car of him like a man of the cloth....

Pretty much. Car salesmen, except for a few older ones that work at luxury dealerships like the guy selling Ferraris in "Scent of a Woman", are pure trash.
