How rampant is cheating in college nowadays?

Well, most students are hopped up on Adderall...so I'd say quite a bit.

I don't think that many people are actually cheating, but most people are on addderall.

In 2016, there are Google Drive accounts a student uses to accumulate exams and provide access to those who have helped them as well.

Nah. It is pretty easy. Scantrons are easy as frick to see from behind or the next row. Most profs I had didn't really give a shite so they weren't on the lookout.

But Scantrons have been around forever. I doubt Scantron cheating is any worse now than it has been in the past. Most of my exams were essay-based, so I guess that is where my perspective comes from.

I figure most cheating happens in lower-level courses anyways. I wouldn't dare cheat in major classes with professors that I know and see on a regular basis.

Methods of cheating on an exam

Texting answers
Taking photos and sending it to the class section taking the exam after you
Apple watch with either notes/formulas/google pulled up

hiring someone to take your exam

Using previous test versions to study. This is infuriating to me because I feel the prof is just as responsible for this type of cheating as the student. If you aren't changing your tests up each semester, you deserve it.

There's a difference between completing an assignment together and dividing up the HW's so that only one person really has to do it while the others get the solutions and can work on other things.

Well, you can't have your phone out. The only thing I'm aware of is people having old tests. Other than that, nothing funny goes on in upper level classes. We can have formula sheets and half of the tests are open book so we can pull numbers to answer problems. You won't finish if you are looking for answers in the book though.

Get your homework answers from Chegg, if you consider that cheating. How else are you supposed to know if it is right or wrong?


Eta: I can write down another person's correct answer, but if I don't have the supporting work, the teacher knows I cheated.

Doing homework together, or even straight copying off someone isn't cheating in my book. It's only hurting you. That teacher didn't give you that assignment to test your knowledge. They did that to give you busy work and make sure you were dedicated to the course. They have known since the very beginning of homework that you had the ability to copy it. This is nothing new. Why I think grading homework is absolutely stupid (as well as attendance).

Also, having copies of old tests isn't cheating. That's just having study material. If the teacher puts the exact questions on the test (Statics), then that's the professor's fault. Get off your lazy arse and come up with an original question. If the student was stupid enough to only learn how to answer example problems, nail them.

I won't lie, I can remember seeing other people's scantrons, or something like that. I never ever just copied and trusted that they were right. But I would say it had caused me to re-check my own personal answer. I feel slightly unethical about that to be honest and would understand if a professor called me out at the time. I also witnessed a guy get caught blatantly copying from a paper in his backpack in a programming class. That was pretty shitty. That is real cheating. I don't think it happens anymore than before. Now it's just done "differently".
