A summer colony dating back to the late 1800s, Fishers Island is an exclusive enclave where generations of old-money families gather to sail and golf. Over the years, Fishers Island residents have included members of the du Pont family—the name still populates the island’s annual phone book—along with former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean, author Rick Moody, former CIA director Porter Goss and Henry Luce III, the late publisher of Time magazine.

But you won’t find these boldfaced names trumpeting their ties to the island: Fishers Island is exceedingly private. Roughly two-thirds of the island is gated, and in some areas there are few street names or house numbers. Socializing largely revolves around sailing, golf and tennis, and the island has two exclusive country clubs with yearslong waiting lists, according to several members. Homes trade infrequently and, when they do, sales are rarely publicized. Even Pierce Rafferty, the director of the island’s Henry L. Ferguson Museum, said he has a policy of not speaking to reporters about the island.

“It’s not that we’re secretive or anything,” said Thomas L. duPont, a longtime summer resident and commodore of the Fishers Island Yacht Club. “We’re just a community that regards the welfare of others first, and you don’t go talking about your neighbors to just anybody.”

They still print these? Haven't seen one that was printed in the last 10+ years.

This is another one of my “if I had a billion dollars” things. I’d tear the mansion down and section 8 the shite out of that place. I’d have those liberal white fricks voting republican for 100 years.

The OP list was full of Republicans and you landed on them being liberal democrats.

Billions probably won't get you on the island. Who you know probably will.

New England used to be full of country club Republicans who were socially moderate to even liberal while fiscally conservative. The lunatic fringe drove them out years ago.

As of the census[24] of 2000, there were 289 people, 138 households, and 77 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 71.3 inhabitants per square mile (27.5/km2). There were 625 housing units at an average density of 154.2 per square mile (59.5/km2). The racial makeup of the community was 95.50% White, 1.04% African American, 1.04% Asian, and 2.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.38% of the population. More than 53% of inhabitants of the island have mainland homes in Connecticut.

And if you’re wondering about the 4.5% non-white residents…

There is also housing for more than 40 employees on the island.

So? What should happen? Just give some random brown or black family a home there?

If that’s the rule they establish for everyone else? Sure.

Why does this matter? Do you judge inner we-city neighborhoods for their lack of diversity?
