How open are you to driverless vehicles on the roads?

I'm looking forward to them. I think car ownership itself is about to be redefined. Many will opt for a driverless uber type usage vs owning cars. All electric of course. A car will become a place of work, rest, eating etc for those who commute. And people may be open to longer commutes given the quality time in the car. Optimized traffic patterns will reduce commute times and accidents. Can't wait.

I feel pretty good about it really. Much safer than some dumb teenage bimbo who drives around texting.

Well considering most of the vehicles I end up behind appear driverless, I guess it wouldnt matter.

Had a thought yesterday as I was trying to merge on the bridge from the Nicholson on ramp. There was a solid line of traffic. Nobody would let me in and I almost had to get off at the Port Allen exit. I wonder how a driverless car would have handled that scenario?

Another driverless car would let you in.

It probably wouldn't have been backed up in the first place.

we wont need stop signs or stoplights once cars drive themselves. cars will communicate and adapt to one another so there is a contiguous flow of traffic. this will save lots of time and also fuel. so congestion like you experienced, most likely because of some dumbass, will be eliminated.

Right. And I'm saying merging wouldn't be an issue because cars will be designed to let other cars merge.

I can't wait. It takes me an hour to go 12 miles most days. I'd love to be able to spend that time doing anything else. Or let the driverless cars cut the commute time because they actually know how to zipper merge to get on the bridge from the other side of the river.

I'm for it, especially given the mindblowing influx of texting while driving.
Google's AV cars drove about 1.3 million miles before experiencing one wreck, a slow speed fender bender, in which the bus it hit was arguably at fault.

What will police forces do when there are no traffic citations to fund their departments? They'll get their money somehow, but by what means?
Posted on 4/17/16 at 3:38 pm to siliconvalleytiger
Considering the problems with all technology, I'm skeptical about safety.

I'd be fine with it.
I'd imagine that there would be a gradual phase-in of wired main routes.
I'd trust a computer much more than a drunk/stoned/horny baw.
I'm looking forward to it, I'll sleep like a boss.

Google's cars have had one at-fault accident for all the millions of miles they have driven. That is a much better track record than a human would have.

Go for a ride in the Tesla or Merc with autopilot, it's pretty spooky.

Not very open to it.
I think we are continually trading freedom for safety, whether it's via the government or technology. I don't want my car communicating with shite, and I don't want to be at the mercy of some grid.
Also, the societal implications of these types of technologies are that we are going to be progressively worth less as humans, and our ability to do things to take care of ourselves will be continually diminished. The automobile has long served as the ultimate American symbol of technology and independence. Would be sad to see it go away.
