Don't use a glove. Make them catch bare handed with their fingers pointed to the sky as you underhand toss a tennis ball to them. Do this for 5 minutes every night at him in the living room. Once they put a glove on they will never basket catch again ans will dominate their league.

My 3.5 year old can track a ball down like a young Andruw Jones...not really, he's more like Smalls in The Sandlot where I have to toss a ball to him in the perfect spot for him to catch it. Probably has his eyes closed half the time

My two year old Brayden is starting travel ball this fall. Already taught him how to throw a slider.

It depends. My oldest is not ver athletic and really didn't grasp catch a ball until almost 9 years old. My youngest started catching at 4 years old. Things come to him more natural. Every kid is different.

My 7 year old has been able to catch a football from 10 feet away since he was 4. Last year he got to the point to where we could throw it across the yard and he could run routes and catch it
But he couldnt catch a baseball until this year. he can hum it across the diamond but never could catch it until a couple months ago.
I think it's just a thing that clicks with kids at a certain point.

If we're talking a baseball...
Most are scared it's going to hurt when they miss it, and it hits them in the chest. Some kids never get over that fear.
Don't know about a baby catching a plastic ball. Might depend on his breeding. What kind of glove did his pops have?

Both my sons could consistently catch a football or dodge ball type ball by about 4. My oldest is 6 now and still can't catch a baseball with a glove, though (younger one can't either).

My five yr old has just started to improve his catching. I've been sort of worried that he just has horrible hand-eye coordination until the past 3 or 4 months.
