As a single guy, the effort and time to cook myself something elaborate isn't worth it. I'd rather spent around 15 bucks on dinner every night than put in the effort cooking myself dinner. I will cook myself lunch and won't eat that out, but I'm not ashamed to admit I will order take out every night.

A lot less than we used to.
We used to go out to eat way too much. Maybe 1-2 times a week for dinner not including eating lunch out a few times a week too.
Now? Maybe 2-3 times a month. We enjoy cooking and have been buying local meats and seafood from farms and consortiums rather than spending money eating out. It’s honestly just not worth the money anymore. Maybe it never was.

$20 is pretty standard for your local taco/pizza/burger/BBQ place these days.
It’s certainly not cheap to eat out.
It’s $70-$80 for my family of 4 at any of these type of places.

quote:Chicken/beef and rice/sweet potato. I usually buy boneless thighs for $1.80/lb on sale and rice is $18 for 25# of jasmine at Costco. Pretty simple. You’d be surprised how cheap you can meal prep for if you shop the sale papers at super 1 and Albertsons.
Do you just eat rice?

No it’s not
It's pretty close. A chicken philly with chips and a drink is about $17 with tax and no tip at Jersey Mike's. Chipotle can easily be $20.

Barely once a month, mainly if traveling. Better food at home and I hate to wait for food, waiter to bring check, noisy environment

The gigantic. The regular is like $12 with chips and tax.
Most people don’t need 2k calories per meal. If you eat for 2 I don’t feel bad for you if it’s $20

It’s not $20, but it’s way too close to $20 for what you’re getting.
After tax, a bowl from Cava is about $15. Fortunately I don’t drink cokes or their other beverages, just water. But with a drink you’re looking at about $17 for a bowl at cava for lunch.
Just one example, I know. But it’s not far off other fast casual lunch options.

it's a weird form of (mostly old people) virtue signaling.
years ago, some poster with like 500 posts would always come into these threads and ramble about how only unhappy and insecure people go to restaurants. hope he makes a return for this.

Yup. If me and my wife each get an app and entrees that’s enough food for each of us to have at least two meals.

being 6'3 and having a fast metabolism is a cruse I wouldn't wish on anyone

I just put a regular with chips and a fountain drink in the app and it was $15.42 after tax, no tip. If you tip $1 you are getting pretty close to $20.

I eat at least 3k calories a day. I spend a decent amount on food when I eat out. I also understand that I’m typically eating more than the allotted portion for one person and that costs more money.

My wife and I usually split an entree on Friday night - Albasha etc. It's plenty for 2 people, but the prices have gotten pretty stupid for eating out either way.

So it’s 25% less than you said it was, got it

You’re not entirely wrong.
There are many, many restaurants where the food is better than anything I could do. And I have no problem going to and paying for those. But I can think of a lot of restaurants that are good, not great, and going there for a burger and fries and a couple beers ends up being $50+ and you walk away thinking “that burger was fine, nothing special”
Granted, two beers damn near doubles the cost of the bill. But what am I supposed to have with my burger? Iced tea? Over my dead body. You drink the iced tea.

Me and my wife have a birthday dinner and don't spend much, our bdays are 4 days apart. We take the kids out to dinner for theirs. Thats literally it. I got 5 kids and a joe biden mortgage, there's no disposable income.
