My dog wouldn't stop eating from the trash and would make herself sick like once every 6 months. We do have a lock on the trash but the kids or guests leave it open every now and then. I told my wife that if the dog eats something lethal then we are going to the vet to put her down. I love our dog but I am not going into to debt over an animal.

You see, this is why Snakes are the best pets. Just toss them in a cage, throw them a rat every week, and that’s about it. No kind of attachment either to where you get that sad whenever it dies.

Not much. We’re gonna stay up to date on shots and whatnot, but I’m not going to be going into lifesaving mode for a pet when I’ve got a family of actual humans to support.

It was a spur of the moment type situation. The vet started talking about a blood transfusion might be needed and thats were I drew the line. If she needed a blood transfusion then put her down. But if its something that doesn't require a lot of treatment for them to get fixed up I am going to do it. If its under $3000 - $4000 (depending on the situation)

Spent about 4k on stuff to help mine in the last 6 months before she passed last month. She was only 6 though. I would be much less likely to spend that with our 14 yr old lab who has had a long full life.

You ain’t lying. Golden retriever/lab mix and it’s just like you said. $300+ every vet visit for ear infections/yeast, skin, ect. The days of $100 vet visits are long gone. You’re not getting out the door under 3 bills. Thing is though if they said $500 I’d still pay it. Love him like one of my boys. But this is last dog.

I spent about $6k all said and done when mine got IMHA, and that was 2018 and she’s still here so it was worth it.

She’s pretty old now. We go tomorrow for a consultation for surgery to get a mass on her pooper removed But now that she’s old, I’m much more conscious about anesthesia so we will see. Mass removal shouldn’t be more than $1k.

whatever it takes, unless whatever needs to be done would be very painful with a long recovery time for an older pet.

Funny you ask because I have a sick chihuahua at the vet right now. I guess I’d spend about 4K to make her better.

Depends how old the animal is and what quality of life is expected. Younger dog that is normally healthy and it's a one off surgery to fix something with little risk of it coming back? Probably up to 5k or so. Cancer? Very little as I'm ethically I'm not sure subjecting dogs to Chemo is appropriate.

I've already spent probably $7-$8k easy on him in his 12 years of life so far on just food, vet visits, treats, toys, stuff (like crates, leashes, collars, etc), boarding is @ $200-$250 every trip.

I think most people spend about that on pets during their life. It's a lot of money you don't think about.

I just spent $38.00 on nose drops for our cat because it has the sniffles.

Make that $76.00. This was the 2nd dosage.

Nose Drops.

It depends less on money and more on what quality of life the dog will have after the medical care.

I've seen people with money put their dogs through treatments where the dog suffered in the process.

Every time I've had to put a dog down, it has broken my heart. My Aussie, best dog I've ever had, is getting old and her time is coming. I remind myself, "Don't throw money at some medical issue that will cause her to suffer or which, if it works, will give her no quality of life."

I sure wish she could be healthy forever.

I have spent as much as 5K on a dog that had cancer, but only lived 2 more months. Still worth it.

I agree. I question the ethics of giving dogs chemo.
