Would the price of surgeries, medicine, and doctors visit be much less if it was cash based? Do insurance companies allow the medical community to charge more for services than a cash based system would?

Insurance is definitely tied to ballooning health care costs, as is Obamacare.

Much less. The introduction of insurance was also the start of the gradual removal of accountability.

It’s nobody’s money, so it must be ok to steal it.

Welcome to $20 for an aspirin.

Of course. Why do you think Lasik, cosmetic, and other elective surgeries are so cheap?

The first thing that would need to change is services would have to have a known cost up front, as the price couldn't be negotiated after the fact, as it is now.

Then, in a free market system, competition would lower overall costs, however better doctors could charge more, which would be an incentive for them to go through more training.

In the end it would be better for all parties, so don't expect Louisiana to do it.

Much cheaper.

My wife suffered a bad ankle sprain in Belize. Cash only. Doctor, X-rays, wrap, crutches, prescription. Under $100.

IMO it would cost about what veterinary medicine costs.

Well, about a year ago, I had to wear this device that monitored my heart for 21 days straight...24/7. When done, they sent me a bill for $4,999.00 and my insurance would not pay a cent. I called the monitor company to discuss and they said they would settle for $29.95!

I used to work at a hospital in the late 1990s - at that time patients were charged $12 a Tylenol

But the employees would take them like candy

So even though $12 is a lot - the employees shouldn’t have mooched either

I never really realized how expensive healthcare is until this cancer bit - some of the bills that I see piling up is astronomical. Hospital is charging my insurance $60k to get a port installed in my chest - my jaw dropped when i saw that.

When people aren’t allowed to negotiate their own prices or pick their own doctors, it gets twisted

Insurance companies negotiate the prices and I think they negotiate in their own interest to keep prices high so they can charge high premiums.

The system is broken. I know that

The fact that many elective vision correction procedures were not covered by insurance was why the procedures became cheaper and better over time.

I did this research a few years back.
If all prices stayed the same.
No more Medicare, no more plans.
No renegotiated rates or drug costs...
Just everyone in a universal single payer program at the current prices?

Over $1k per person per month.
Flat.

The amount they bill insurance is insane. I had a $1.2 million liver transplant in Jan. 2020. The negotiated rate insurance paid was $230K. Where does the hospital make up that other million, or it just an inflated bill?
