I meant to ask how this is even possible. I've been through 2 surgeries and have another scheduled next week for my son. Tubes were fast but we still had to be there an hour plus pre-surgery. And his first surgery we had to be there hours in advance.

My guess, maybe because we were the first procedure of the morning. we spent longer in post op than anything, seriously. they took my son back to the procedure room, I turned around and went to the restroom, I get out of the restroom, wife said they already called us back to see him. we spent about ten minutes waiting for the anesthesia to wear off, they gave him some drops and we chatted with the Dr. for a second and then we were on our way. could it have been longer than 30 minutes? I supose it could have been longer, but all in all it was less than an hour total time. I remarked to to my wife on the drive home about that was the shortest trip to see any kind of medical professional I've ever seen, she said the same thing.

Our tube surgery was quick too. We barely sat down in the waiting room before it was over, I just remember trying to tame a toddler waiting for surgery who hasn't eaten or drank since the day before. Seemed like hours.

I can’t believe you would put a price on your child’s hearing.

Has nothing to do with hearing. It has to do with the ability for fluid to drain out of the ears. Smaller ear canals for babies, sometimes, can't drain out all the way, and the children get ear infections, which leads to fevers and sickness. Both of mine had tubes, and it was the best procedure to have done. Prior to tubes, my kids were sick all the time. Once the tubes were in, they stopped getting sick. The only thing that sucks, is you have to wait 9 months until they are old enough to have the procedure.

You are understating it. When yellow fluid is running out of your kid's ears on a weekly basis because the ear drum ruptured to let the pus out, after countless nights of night-screaming from your child, and your pediatrician says everything is fine, it's normal for babies to cry, it is normal to get ear infections, take him back to ped and he looks inside ear and says no ear infection, then it ruptures in the check-out line, so he says "That's why they call it practicing medicine hee hee" and finally refers to ENT for tubes to drain the fluid so it doesn't cause permanent hearing loss due to constant ear drum rupturing, it costs $35,000

Ok, I was understating it. I wanted to kick the shite out of the pediatrician every time they said it was “a continuation “ of the previous ear infection, so it didn’t count. At the time, if I remember correctly, had to have a referral to get the ent to do the procedure.

Switched doctors and found one who wasn’t a count and saw how horrible it was for my son, okayed the procedure.. stuck with that doc for the rest of the kids’ childhoods.

Long story short, had to find an ER.

Ya, the issue is you went to the ER when you didn't have to most likely.

ER visits will crush you and most ER visits are unnecessary, but it's hard for Joe Patient to delineate when an ER is truly necessary.

It wouldn't be a wiccan
American healthcare if you didn't feel like you were raped after you got the bill.

When my son had his tubes in 2013, my insurance was a lot better.

Same for me when my kids had tubes in the early 2000’s. Had a bad arse plan with Aetna where basically everything cost 20 bucks out of pocket... had a kid, plus an extra day? 20 bucks. Vasectomy? 20 bucks. Laparoscopic surgery on wife’s gall bladder? 20 bucks.

‘‘Twas a sad day when that plan got replaced. Insurance is still better than what most people have, but in no way is it close to that plan.

Went to an urgent care facility first. They said they couldn't do anything so they sent us to the ER. The ER we went to had a department just for children. I will say it was very nice and they were expedient. I guess that's because they charge an arm and a leg for their services.

Pretty sure I paid about the same amount as you. It seems crazy to me too how much a quick and simple surgery costs.

It really does have an effect on hearing. They have trouble hearing with the fluid in their ears, and it can lead to scarring which could also hinder hearing. My son's speech and vocabulary took off right after his tubes were put in; I know some of that was his age, but the improvement in his hearing was noticeable

Nothing. My kids were normal (no need for tubes).

I was told the procedure would cost about $4000 and I have very good insurance. Paid like $280 out of pocket which i figures was all i had to pay. Got a bill for like $1500 additionally that I owe because the surgical center wasn’t covered under our health plan, only the doctor. How the frick is that possible?

And the surgeons time and their liability insurance.

I looked up the BCBS fee schedule (ie what the surgeon gets paid for this procedure): it's $230 for the one ear and $345 if both ears get tubes in the same setting.

$200 post insurance.
Lauren Mickey she's nice and seem considerate.
I need to go to her to get wax dug out of my ears. Very irritating.

Just poke his ear drum with a bottle rocket stick. That's what my friend did to me at about 10 y/o. It was free.

If it was a "freestanding ER" yes, they are nice and they charge a lot, and almost all of them are out of network so you will get hosed bad.

There's a lot of pitfalls to watch out for.
