No, on my kid's $35k bill, the ENT was the least expensive. The guy that actually did the work was less than $1000.
Teach kid to be a facility owner. Or anesthesiologist.

Quality of life has definitely improved, but this is god damned robbery. I realize that’s why we have insurance so I don’t have to swallow that entire cost, but it shouldn’t cost that much in the first place.

About $1400-$1500 when all I was said and done with, by today’s standards, good insurance.
ETA: Is this is the kid’s first time, be sure to get the extended warranty. The second time around was like $495.

#1 they aren’t getting $15k
They bill $15k because someone, somewhere, has agreed to reimburse for that amount. Your insurance may have negotiated much lower, but that number has a purpose nonetheless.

$0 for tubes.
We got the tubes put in around the beginning of December.
Already met Out of Pocket max $7500 with my sons NICU bill. The full bill from 18 days of NICU was $480,000. Damn that’s some expensive stuff right there. Thank God for max out of pocket and that we could do the tube surgery within that year.

Yeah. But based on OPs description, they aren’t getting $15k from OPs insurer.

Dunno.
I just know Dr Raggio meant pain.

If a cash paying customer paid $15k, that’s their own dumb fault.

Don’t they have to show you their actual costs though? For example, if you have 80% coinsurance doesn’t that have to be based on the insurance company’s actual cost, rather than some fake billing value?
Or am I being naive?

Sure, but it's a great example of the jacked up health care in this country nonetheless.
Costs are simply never discussed until you get a bill. It's pretty crazy how little transparency there is in health care costs. Ask the person who does the work how much it costs and they couldn't tell you. That's a problem unique to health care

Yep. And try getting a cost ahead of time...watch their heads explode
We have a HDHP and anything I know will be costly I try and get the price ahead of time. Some places are excellent at this. Some think this is some insane request.
For instance, I needed to call the anesthesiology group that the facility used to get an estimate. Gave them the procedure info and my insurance info and still got a “well, it depends”. After getting the run around the convo went like this:
Me: How long have y’all been in business?
Billing Rep: 15 years
Me: So you have a historical reference to the highest and lowest charges for my insurer for this common situation.
Billing Rep: Between $x and $y
Me (thinking): See. That wasn’t hard.

Coinsurance is based on the health insurance negotiated rate. It's a real number.

I had a Dr appointment this morning actually. Never been to this particular place. Asked the nurse what to expect to be charged and her exact words were "I don't know how much any of this costs, but I can get you to the insurance girls if need be."
Thats pretty damn mind blowing when you think about it.

Got charged with two surgery fees, two anethesiologist fees, and two facility fees. Because there are two ears.
I reported it to the fraud hotline at Cigna and to the state (GA) and they both said it wasn't fraudulent, it's normal.
I wish you the best of luck bro between this and your childs prek lunch fiasco.

OK so to my point, even if the $15k isn’t real there should be a real cost somewhere on the EOB, no?

Youngest son had tubes and a tonsillectomy and I paid about $150 nine years ago.

We all know what you mean, but this is the problem with health care.
You paid a co-pay and that was that. The separation of money between end user and receiver is absurd.
