Because we'd only get a couple manuals a week. If there wasn't a valet there that could drive it, one of the managers would drive it.

Friday & Saturday nights I'd make about $20+/hour with only $6 an hour being taxed. It was also Friday/Saturday night.

Valets are pussies. Evidenced by Louie.

why would they hire valets that couldn't drive a stick?

You know how rare sticks are these days?

$3-$5...the problem is making sure you have some small bills when standing out there...not embarrassing yourself and your SO.

It depends on establishment. Never tip below 3/5 bucks.

Was a valet for a fancy museum event one night in college. Of all the nice cars parked, a baller in a Ford Probe tipped me 10 dollars.

Like most said $3-5 is pretty standard. I work as a valet attendant and its one of the best jobs, money wise, a college kid can have IMO.
And we don't split tips so if you hustle you can make a really good amount of cash in one night.

I typically self park if possible, because I like easy, unlimited access to my vehicle...when it is necessary to valet, I usually give $5 every time I check out my vehicle...

I'm supposed to tip the guy taking my car?

Tipping the guy who brings it back to you is what I've always heard, though on occasion I've done both. For the guys who have worked as a valet, do you expect the tip coming or going?
ETA: going to Chicago in a few weeks - the fricking hotels charge $40-$60/day for valet parking (which I think is not optional at most)

$3-$5 is the right answer

This. I usually give $5, especially if I know the lot is far away or it's raining, etc.

Depends on where/when you work. The hotel I worked at was slammed with business people during the week, so most people dropped their cars at night and took them in the morning. Those who worked night shift would never make anything if no one tipped going in and morning shift would make a killing if everyone only tipped going out.

When staying at a hotel, drop your tip in half and pay $2 each way

Restaurant or for just a night out, tip on way out.

I usually do $5-10. Unless it's a hot female then it goes up.

Going. We make 95% of our money when guests leave. Anything on their way in is just a little something extra.

And I assume most places that charge for valet like that, pay their attendants a better salary so tipping isn't as big of a deal. Where I work its free and we're paid $5/hr so tipping is more encouraged I guess.

Lunch time, $3-5.
Dinner if he parks it at the front of the restaurant, $10.

Eta: And I tip half when they take the car. Other half if it comes back undamaged.

I usually tip $2-5 depending on what's in my wallet.
