the trick with that is that the close friend may create such furor that the woman just runs.
you can't wait long with O-T 8's or better.
if she has an advanced degree and she's a solid O-T 7, same thing.

I would go to the woman and say you would be interested but only if your friend, her ex, is cool with it, and would she would wiling to go out some if he was not bent out of shape around it all?
at that point, she sees you are a sensitive caring person. two points.

2. I don't want to date you anyway.
it may get back to him, but it will always be couched in your saying only if he is not hurt by it.
3. variations on, that's nice. I will let him know we had this conversation and that I am not taking orders from him.

Then you ask. if you are really good friends, you can have this conversation.

If you feel like you'd want to hide it from him, you shouldn't.
If you would call him the next day and tell him about it knowing he wouldn't be pissed, play ball.
The answer lies within you.
If the guy is a top tier buddy, you should be hands off. You don't do that.
If he is just a dude that you play pick up basketball with a couple of times a month kind of friend, that's different.
She's probably working you anyway and it will probably blow up in your face.

If good friend is to stay good friend then you can't. If it's ok that good friend is to become ex-friend or enemy then go ahead within minutes.
