A typical system is going to cost a fortune. Mini-splits would be my suggestion.

We spent $17k on a new HVAC system, new furnace, and full ductwork replacement/rerouting on a 2200 sq. ft house in March of 2021. That did not include a new compressor.

Is the house raised or do you have ample attic space(presuming it’s a one story)? Either way running duct is going to cost 8-12k alone. 3000 sq ft will require 6 tons so 2 units and all the necessary crap to run two units(line sets, 220, drains, etc.). Easy 20k but more likely 25-30k.

Seriously don’t mean to rain on your parade, but OUCH. Hopefully you have someone to snug up to in the winter and aren’t too bothered by the heat.

2 3Ton Trane Units with cleaning out of duct work quoted out was $26K in April 2022.
Just FYI.

I am in the northeast. I am spending almost $8k to replace a 2 ton compressor and the air handler.

Easily into the $25 or $30k range. Look into mini splits and/or window shakers.

Granted I've got a small 1 story starter house, but I say frick them central units.
When it's 100+ with the sun beading down our unit runs constantly and might keep it in the upper 70's inside if not the lower 80's. Then the bill is $300+.
Being it's me and the wife we close off two bedrooms and run one 8500 btu unit in the living room, and a 5k btu unit in the kitchen and bedroom and we stay cool for $200ish.
Yes I am trashy and IDGAF. I want to be cool.

We bought a 3 story house with half assed crap A/C last year and I think our total bill to redo the ductwork, add a new unit, and add 2 mini splits was $38k. And that's with it having already had central A/C working in some of the house.
Are you in love with the house? Because yikes. If so, though, mini splits are the way to go.
We actually have a mini split running up the 3rd floor through existing ductwork that wasn't receiving central A/C well, so it is hidden in the ceiling with a vent plate just like central A/C.

You should budget $50k. Probably need a two zone system. If the house was like my last one (older home) you aren't going to be able to run duct work between 1st and 2nd floor. One unit for basement / 1st floor and another for 2nd / 3rd. It was a house in NJ.

You need an energy audit. You can probably get tax credits to upgrade your windows, add insulation, and seal up leaks.
I have three units and only average $400 per month between the main house and my guest house. I keep one side of the house on 75 and the other on 73 but it feels like it's freezing. I am sure high ceilings help with that but also I made sure it was well-insulated when I remodeled. The energy usage was way worse when we first bought the place.

You should praise your god for due diligence and move on.
I just moved into a new 3 story place last week with a 4 ton system and I can already tell it’s going to be a brutal summer (or I’m gonna start sleeping in the basement).
