How much does it cost to barge on a 200 mile stretch of MS River?

Since I know we have some people in this industry, how much does an operation of 200 miles up then down MS River in Louisiana cost for a 30,000 ton vs 1,500 ton single barge? Trip upriver is empty, coming back would have 30,000 tons. Mile markers are 200 miles apart.
How much does this cost per-ton/mile? or per mile? Is there a fixed vs variable rate breakdown?

I'd find a barge upriver and pay 1 way, not 2 way.

$4500 / day for the tugboat + fuel at $1,500 to $2,000 / day
$1,000 / day for the barge
200 miles would be approximately 2 days each way
Add 1 day for loading and offloading
Approximately $35,000 - $40,000 / trip.

Barge rental is $300/day
Push boat is $3000/day plus fuel and lube

Probably would be cheaper to get that one barge tied onto a group of other barges for the trip. Hiring one tug to take one barge by itself would probably be higher than giraffe arse in comparison.

This is an annual operation. We'd have everyday needing 1,500 tons of material to get from point A upriver to point B 200 miles downriver. It's not a 1 gig stint.

Depends on how many barges, what type of product, how long is the charter and do you need covers or not, assuming you’re talking about a hopper barge

Then you wouldn't be pricing an empty barge trip one way north into it. You would broker a 1 way daily trip.

So basically a 1,500 ton barge going 200 miles upriver then 200 miles back, everyday of the year?
I would think, in this situation, the most feasible thing to do would be to buy your own boat and have an operator on salary. Or just completely lease one out. Hard to imagine that would ultimately cost 35-40k per trip.

No way. Slap that thing in a tramp tow and let it go. Nobody is paying for a single barge to make that trip on a regular basis.
Also, $1k for the barge is absurd..

Sounds like you should lease a boat and buy a barge

Call Canal Barge, they’ll quote you.

1 barge (1,500 tons), call it trees/brush/pulpwood, 200 miles, I'd have to check on cover but prob not, yes hopper barge

This is true and in all likelihood we will probably do one trip with 12 to 15 barges and make the trip biweekly instead of 1 a day. I wanted to see the costs of both. So in addition you can add 15 barges to spread cost more evenly

Hopper barge prices can fluctuate depending on the season. Anywhere from $250/day to $1000/day.
Just depends if it’s cutting season or not

You aren’t wanting to do this by itself. Why does it have to be daily? Can you do 3 every 3 days for instance? It’s much more labor intensive to do this one at a time, then multiple together on the same day. So if you need one a day delivered you do 3 every 3 days ahead of time and 2 of them are there early. Which depends on your docking.
But there’s going to be a lot more that goes into this, think like taking a train for 1 car instead of 50 cars. You gotta do the logistics of 50 cars arriving and leaving.
