I never do...Gas Prices is what they are set at...Bulk Unleaded Gas is near $2.00 a gallon...It's the taxes that drive the cost up...

Yes starting pay is $28+ great benefits, probably a pension as well since most likely union. However shift work? You can have that crap. 3nights on, 3 days off, 4 days on, cpl days off, 4 nights on. Your body stays screwed up

top pay is prob around $40-50/hr for operators.

Mid 50's where I am at.

Only way I increase my salary would be through consulting or grants though. So I wouldn’t touch $200K a year ever. But the work-life balance is amazing. College of Business professor. Some schools are well over $200K a year though.

Don't doubt you "know a guy" though
I mean, I definitely can’t show you his W2. It’s dumb to even ask that. $285k is rare. There aren’t many people that will get there. He literally had to come in 4 hours early and stay 4 hours late on a lot of days. You can do the math yourself if you’d like but $75 an hour at 1700 hours of overtime is $127k by itself. Not counting the holidays, bonuses and double time days. You can believe it or not. Doesn’t matter to me. Our company matches 9% for our 401k’s including overtime, so he was trying to build his 401k as much as possible, he works about 500-600 overtime a year now because he got married. I have worked 400 hours outside of my schedule and made $185k so far. I’ll get one more check before the end of the year and I expect to be $195k at the end because I have some overtime and a double time days on it.

School is foolish if paying you that much and not getting published on a very regular basis.
Just bad business.

Breaking 200 is not that tough. You can call bull shite, I have no reason to lie to a bunch of internet strangers about what my coworker makes.
I agree and believe you. Apparently these know-it-all's work at low paying or poor pay practice plants.
I've got a coworker that worked roughly 1300 hours OT this year. Basically 13 and 1 doing special projects and other bullshite. His gross pay for the year (not including benefits) is about $280k.
The guys that don't believe you apparently have never heard of overtime after 8 hours, or OT days being worth way more than a regular day. They won't understand unless they get on at an upper level plant that does these things.

But I’ll be the first to tell you we’re overpaid. But I’ll be damned if I don’t take advantage of the salary opportunity.

You have a problem with 401k????

Someone making 275K and doing so to bulk up their 401k is, well, just laughable. Especially because "their employer matches" even on OT.

He should max that out with ease

Supposedly they pay better in Texas because the operators are union while the Louisiana ones are not.
Most plants in LA are union plants, most don’t realize this. Even Exxon in BR is union.
I’m a plant operator. Without OT, I make about $100k a year. Depending on OT, I make $120k-$160k a year, but I’m not an OT hog. Some of them guys push $200k, but they live there.

Maybe he can convince his company to keep contributing past his max, but Jesus what a stupid move.
Id be retired in 3 years.

Why are you in this thread flexing about how much you make.
These guys making this plant money aren’t all they well educated and these jobs give them a way to make great money for the areas they live in.
What’s the problem you have with this?

Every day. And not take a day off

That would get you to right at $250k, so a lot less than you said. And again, no extra days off than what is required.

We won’t, because it’s bullshite
It’s still decent money. Lying about it is so bizarre

Live in Orange, Texas. Been doing Boilermaker work the past 6 years and thinking about getting a P-tech degree whether at Sowela or LIT.
How much do these guy start off at and how much do they make 5 years down the road?
The chem plants I am familiar with... have no idea on petro/refinery
Current going rate in Non-union plants is $50 per hour top rate. Can work up to top rate in 3-3.5 yrs. Normal starting pay is $35 ish with some regular step increases for merit or time on the job. OT over 40 hrs and benefits. Good steady income, chance for advancement, sleep in your own bed every day/night.
I have worked both Union and Non-union sites and the NU jobs have it much sweeter in this scenario because they get to top pay regardless of seniority in a short time period. Companies make it that way to keep it that way in this area. Not an endorsement one way or another.
And it is a helluva a lot easier than Boilermaker work.
