I see a couple of legitimate answers here. The correct answer is, anywhere between $125K and $200K, based on your experience. Some firms are hiring in the area, but many are not. 3 words can describe the current state of the Jacobs Piping Department - "Outsource to India". Good luck

Hell yeah it is. Are you in the industry?

Yeah I work at a place in BR. The place you got your degree from doesn't offer any assistance finding jobs?

Yeah they do, but it's a bunch of bull shite. Just trying to chase the money. My current job is somewhat in my field. I don't wanna say too much but we design instrumentation for vessels in plants. Mostly B31.1 and B31.3 ASME standards. Not really sure if that would help me in this case though.

I would think that would certainly be a plus. Depending on your position there and knowledge of control systems, that should get you a job...when they are hiring. That looks much better than not having any work experience.
Just keep sending resumes off, it just takes one. I would send them to every firm in town, big and small.

It's common knowledge that designers make more than most engineers. I'm a designer and my base salary is over $100K. With OT it's easy to make that much. And I've only been in the field a little less than 10 years
Things are kinda shaky right now though and some places are laying off. It's kind of feast or famine in this industry.

My father in law was laid off last week. He was a piping designer for them for 29 years straight and had moved around multiple times to stay employed.

Designers oftentimes make more than engineers. Usually this is due to engineers not being paid 1.5 for OT when designers to get paid 1.5. With the same experience the engineers base is usually a little higher, but designers surpasa their gross with OT.
