How many people really attended the 2017 Essence Festival in the Superdome? Not 470,000

How many people attended the 2017 Essence Festival? That depends on how you define “festival,” and who you ask.
On the closing night, Chance the Rapper stood on the main stage of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and proclaimed that 60,000 fans were on hand.
His number was way off. The Dome’s capacity for Essence is only about 45,000, and the building wasn’t nearly full.
Afterward, producers announced that Essence “attracted more than 470,000 attendees to New Orleans this Fourth of July weekend.”
Many Essence attendees are locals. And most everyone goes to multiple events throughout Essence weekend, so they are counted multiple times.
Give or take a few thousand, that adds up to an overall attendance of approximately 90,000, an increase from 2016.

How did 470,000 people get all that time off from the job?

I really don't give a shite.
I guess because none of the attendees shot people or were shot, this is what the OT comes up to bitch about

I do advertising in New Orleans for festivals and large events, and between the Dome and the Convention Center I would easily say that 470,000 is not far off. The sheer amount of people in and around downtown caused roads to close and made work difficult. Oddly enough though, Essence Fest is really quick to pay whereas other festivals drag their feet. I don't find that number off at all.

The quarter was sketchier than I've ever seen it during Essence this year. I could see exactly when the non-tourists started filtering into the quarter to target their victims. It was pretty terrifying.

This.
I have no idea what the actual number was, but I'd be willing to bet it was more than 90k. Downtown was a fricking shitshow that whole week it seemed.

No it's not. I have never personally been in the quarter late at night and felt less safe than I did from 2:00-3:00am on the saturday night during Essence this year. I don't go down to the quarter a ton, and this was my first time being down there during Essence Fest (I was there for a wedding), but I've been out late on Bourbon and on Frenchmen dozens of times and never felt remotely unsafe. This was different, and it wasn't all in my head.

There are several different events. It's not like a single concert and that picture could have been taken during one of the less popular events.
I've been to New Orleans during the weekend of Essence Festival and it really isn't bad at all. It seems like many of the people who come in from out of state are more "upper class" type. On several occasions I had conversations with people who was there, from out of state, to attend Essence, but I am not scared of black people so.

This. It wasn't the out of towners that scared me. It wasn't the tourists gallivanting on Bourbon Street. It was the locals that came to pray on those tourists that made me uneasy. I felt safe when we were still in a large group that included multiple former marines, but as the night went on, our group split up as we headed back to our different hotels, which left me and one of my friends, who is maybe 90 lbs soaking wet, feeling like sitting ducks walking back to where we were staying. We couldn't drive back because so many streets were blocked off.

I've been told that ESSENCE Fest and the Bayou Classic are two times out of the year hospitality industry workers call in sick en masse.

It's on a holiday weekend.
Don't they claim 1MM go to FQF? Do you pose the same question.

Walked from lafittes to Erin rose around that time and absolutely nothing was out of the ordinary in any way, everything felt safe and seemed perfectly fine. And then walked through the quarter again when we left there, and guess what, everything was cool
You're just a pussy like the majority of people in here that are scared of your own shadow and freak out about headlines from the news. New Orleans is the same city it's always been, the only difference is that men are turning into women at an alarming rate and it's beyond annoying that it's in my face constantly

Sounds like you're challenging bob to a meeting at Sonic.
*Also, hilarious that NOLA defense has turned into "ur a pussy" "proud to be a frickin Landrieu" garbage

The tourists are turning into a bunch of pussies too
They used to be able to handle shots like that back in the day. Thanks Trump.
