WAFB

quote:

A computer malfunction apparently caused the gas pumps at the Circle K on Highland Road at Staring Lane to drop to the bare minimum before workers noticed the problem and shut off the pumps. Regular unleaded gas was selling for $.019 per gallon. Premium unleaded fuel was selling for $.025 per gallon.

quote:

A worker inside the store told customers a computer glitch caused the error and they were waiting for a supervisor to arrive to reset the pumps.

A guy I jumped with told me a story of something similar happening to him. He said it pissed him off because he was only on his bike and not in his RV.

If this happened at North Foster or Plank the clerk would have been tied up.

I like how people are calling this dishonest and/or theft. It's not the consumers responsibility to worry about what prices a business sets, even if in error, plain and simple.

Tell yourself whatever you want - it's theft.

It's no different logically than trying to spend money out in your bank account by bank error. You can and will be arrested for doing that.

I don’t know if it still exists but in Louisiana there used to be some crazy consumer protection law (or some such nonsense) that required stations to make a minimum of 6¢ per gallon profit. The justification was that it prevented so-called price wars where a larger station could sell at a deep loss to put their competitors out of business.

Can you explain how it's theft?

They paid the recommended price per gallon at the time of purchase.

Member when the LA Purchase card fricked up and didn't have spending limits?

The frenzy at some stores was likened to the busiest shopping day of the year. "It was worse than any Black Friday,” Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd told local station KSLA-TV.

Judging by what I see working at gas stations, I’m surprised this isn’t a daily occurrence.

Not really. Any business has “breakage” and/or product loss built into their long term business model. This frickup for the bottom line of the business is no different than an idiot clerk screwing up some piece of equipment that cost a couple of grand to fix.

It's not against the law on retail items, but it's no different logically than any other fraud or theft. You know full well it's a glitch.

If you want to take advantage of it and sleep well at night, more power to you, but it's morally wrong.

Would you knowingly take incorrect change from a cashier?

I wouldn’t even notice. I’d just start pumping and at the end I’d see it and think to myself - well I don’t know. And then just fricking leave.
