I don't think that I have ever had a car that was an Automatic...
Learned on a '66 dodge dart.. 3 on the tree...
My Truck now is a '05 f150 5 speed..
Drove a 91 Jeep Cherokee 5 speed for 25 years.
and my Harley goes without sayin'

What I learned on in the early 70's.

I learned how to drive with one. I’ve never owned one and I can’t remember the last time I’ve driven one. It might not be smooth sailing for the first 5 minutes especially on uphills but it’s like riding a bike.

Dad made sure my first truck had a manual transmission so that I would have to learn to drive it.

I'm a millennial, my grandfather taught me how to drive with a stick on his farm. First vehicle I ever drove. I'll make sure my sons know how to drive stick

First two trucks I owned were manuals - 92 F150 and a 01 Ranger. Both were great vehicles.
Most of the semi's Ive driven were 10 speeds at minimum, but now they are rare to see because the mega carriers are full automatic fleets. I do miss shifting a semi, made the job more fun and it was easier to control the speed of the rig.

I'd pay a little extra for a brand new truck with a stick shift. I drive a lot, and I enjoy it. I hate that my car is a manual and my truck is not, but HD trucks aren't offered with manuals anymore as of 2019, and in the years before the few that were offered were near impossible to find.

I've been off for a while fighting cancer, but I beat it and am heading back in mid/late September. I have no idea what the bull haulers make though, I've never really bothered with them because they mostly run nights and their rigs smell like filth from hell.

Did you ever drive an Eaton Fuller 18? The high/lo and splitting boggles my mind. I get the physical process of shifting but the transmission is one of those mystery black boxes to me.

Wast taught to drive a truck with a stick shift when I was 6 so dad could throw hay off the back of the truck to feed cattle. Farm Life

In the US it's much less common, but still a good skill to have. Have had to use it for off road driving in the UK and Central America.
