Historic life expectancy in USA

Most of that gain is in infant and child mortality. If you made it past adolescence you had a decent chance of living to old age.

Dang I wonder how much of the increase is due to vaccines saving kids

35-40 would make a crappy marriage more tolerable

I’d like to see that for people who made it past 20.

True. But how many of us would have made it past adolescence?

Is that people born into those periods or people who died in those periods?

My sister had pneumonia as a child. She would have been a goner for sure.

Some, for sure. Maybe more simply because of anti-biotics and sanitation, especially during surgeries.

How many of us had jaundice? Half of us probably effortlessly survived “small” complications not even impactful enough for our mothers to tell us about, that would have killed us.
Essentially we wouldn’t have died at 40. But a lot of us would definitely have brought the average down to that

This.
A lot of founding fathers made it to 80s
John Adams made it to 90

Then there's the quality of life stuff we take for granted. If you tore an ACL you were just crippled. If you broke an arm or leg it probably got amputated. If you developed cataracts you went blind.

I almost proved that correct a couple of times. In fact I received last rites from an African Catholic priest in a Baptist hospital.

Technically, I still have it. (I have Gilbert's syndrome...)

There was a time if a kid got appendicitis they usually died.
I got diverticulitis when I was 50,without antibiotics and subsequent surgery I would have died.
