Are cafeterias going extinct?

I haven't eaten at one in probably 20 years.

My grandparents lived in Houston and I remember eating at Luby's a lot when we would visit them. Loved Luby's.

Louisiana had Piccadilly and Morrison's which weren't as good.

Piccadilly was the GOAT cafeteria back in the day.

yes, any non-full service restaurant that doesn't offer some kind of delivery is going extinct.

The Piccadillys in the late 80's and early 90's was the best.

State Police Cafeteria is also very good today.

I love some Piccadilly. Roast beef au jus, smashed taters, green beans, Neptune sallid, iced tea, and a slice of pee-can pie with coffee. Mmmm...

Wednesday is chicken day and the place is usually is packed. Have you ever eaten their stuffed bell peppers?

Piccadilly was the GOAT and went south but try one now. They have stepped it up the last few years. DESTROYS Golden Corral.

I have not. I'm sure it is very good.

They're competing against Stockyard Cafe on Wednesday - chicken day as well!

I've been going to Piccadilly lately around 8:00 as they close at 8:30. They throw out the majority of the food every night so they will load up to go boxes with whatever you ask for. I got close to three servings of roast beef the other night.

frick.You.

However, Cleburne Cafeteria in Houston is the GOAT and will be reopening in March 2017 after a fire last April.

I remember Piccadilly having that rectangle shaped fried codfish with the crispy crust. Yummy.

Luby's, it was all about the chicken fried steak. Hammered thin and fried crispy, especially on the edges. Delicious.

And getting a small carton of Schwepps chocolate milk or a cool glass of that fruit punch as you pushed your trays down the line.

Is that by the old bridge near the Dominique Stock Yard?

Anybody remember Duff's Smorgasbord? Tasted better going up than it did going down, but it was cheap.

Used to eat at the Piccadilly growing up (Westmoreland, Cortana, Sherwood, Essen). I started going back to the Essen location when we had kids but when they grew up, we stopped. The only time I have been back is when I hanging out with people that were in the OLOL (maybe twice over the last 5 years).

Yes, that's actually it.

For some reason, I called it the Stockyard Cafe in my previous reply ... but you're correct with the name Dominique's Stock Yard.

As a very young child, I can remember eating at the Piccadilly inside Bon Marche Mall.

I used to love watching the trays, filled with dirty plates and glasses, go on to the conveyor belt to be cleaned.

Loved it back in the day. Went in recently and viewed it through my current perspective: it was appalling. The average diner was obese and the crap being served was as opposite of what a person should be eating as was imaginable.

I wonder if Bellue's is still open. The one on Jefferson closed a while back. Good groceries.
