re: How many battles did the US lose in the Vietnam War?

Does it really matter what number of battles we won and lost on paper?
Yes, it does matter. The military gets a bad rap for Vietnam when they performed as well as could be expected when they were fighting with their hands tied behind their backs by the politicians in D.C.
Claiming victory in more battles would have swung the favoritism for the Vietnam War in America?

I'm not going through all of them but some of these seem questionable when referring to "losing a battle".
Besides sapper attacks and categorizing every downed aircraft as a "lost battle" most of the entries cite the amount of American casualties with no mention of what the VC or NVA lost.
quote:
Attack on Qui Nhon Barracks - The US Army leased a hotel to house a helicopter field support unit. On February 10, 1965, Vietcong sappers killed its two guards, placed two large satchel charges, and blew up the hotel, killing 23 Americans and seriously wounding another 21.
quote:
Attack on Xom Bong - The "Rolling Thunder" bombing campaign began on Mar 2, 1965 as dozens of American jets attacked an ammunition storage facility 35 miles north of the DMZ. Several buildings were destroyed, but two F-100D and three F-105D fighter aircraft were shot down by ground fire.
quote:
The Dragon's Jaw - On Apr 3, 1965, the U.S. military conducted the first of hundreds of bombing raids to destroy the Thanh Hoa Bridge in North Vietnam. Thousands of bombs were dropped and eleven American aircraft shot down with several more damaged beyond repair until the iron bridge finally fell in 1972.

What’s that old saying about the British? They lose every battle except for the last one?

It just seems petty to me in this instance to claim victory or be concerned with how many battles we won and lost.
It was a contrived conflict that we had no business being in. We pussy footed around over there for 15 years and lost almost 60,000 Americans for absolutely nothing. The military’s reputation no longer hinges on Vietnam like it did 25 years ago. We have our own generation’s two decade old pointless and directionless conflict to shape the military’s reputation

The North Vietnamese won the war. Communism took over south Vietnam and Laos. The United States and American led forces withdrew. North Vietnam annexed south Vietnam. I’m pretty sure thats indicative of the United States losing their part in the war. It was a losing battle for the United States from the onset.

Consider how the US fought in Vietnam; particularly post 1967: NVA takes unoccupied hill/area/hamlet, US finds out and attacks, US clears area of all enemy after several days of fighting, situation is stabilized. US leaves hill/area/hamlet NVA comes back a month later and takes the same hill again. Strategically, the US lost every time this happened.

No, but we aren’t talking about favoritism in the American citizenry. We’re talking about battles that the US military took part in.

Politically, we lost. But militarily we killed about 15 times as many NVA and southern communist guerillas as they killed of our military personnel.

Do you understand that the north signed a peace treaty that was more favorable to the Americans and the south and then the north attacked and our politicians and population just left the south in the wind? The north didn’t force us to withdraw, our politicians did.

This was common knowledge not all that long ago. It's interesting reading some of these comments and realizing how fast historical narrative changes happen.

Doesn’t matter. All is fair game in war. Yes, We withdrew even if it was for political reasons. The bottom line is the North Vietnamese took over pretty much what they wanted to. The north Vietnamese were willing to give up as many dead bodies as possible to reach its end goal. We gained nothing from the war and lost lots. I would call that a victory for the North Vietnamese and a loss for the United States. Although we may disagree on who won, the vast vast majority of historians point to a North Vietnamese victory

You are right. The US was well prepared and should have been there. It was a good move on their part.

Quick question, when the US was in the war and was fighting, did we come to the table after losing the war? Or, like what actually fricking happened, after we kicked the shite out them so thoroughly that they had to wait a couple years in order to get their strength up and they knew we weren’t going to come back into the war and whip their asses AGAIN, did the north win?

No. But someone said that whoever taught me that the US was unprepared and should not have been there was full of crap.

OK. It still makes no sense to frame your rebuttal around arguments no one has made. There's a term for that: strawman.

Dude the North Vietnamese were taking over even as our troops were leaving.
And yes, it was much much worse for the south after the United States left.
I’ll just leave this conversation with this. We were not prepared for the war and never should have been there.

That's what happens when you withdraw.
