Driverless cars. Suppose a few actuarial studies are made down the road that show auto accidents and deaths are virtually nonexistent. Insurance companies declare they will not insure peolw who actually driver cars.

Possible?

I'll take a driverless car on the road any day over dipshit barbie texting "OMG LOL" and running people off the road.

I think we are still a pretty far way away from driverless cars being feasible on a large scale.

Insurance companies stand to lose too much money if this happened. I don't think it will.

My guess is that there will be variable insurance based on the driver's habits.

Someone who does 100% automatic will have very low premiums and vice versa.

the police will never allow it until they can find a way to ticket the computer driving the car

I'm not sure. Driverless cars at some point will be programed to either kill you or someone else. How will it make that decision? Just listen to what the great philosopher Jeremy Clarkson has to say on the issue. LINK

Just talked to my friend about this yesterday. He works for a company that works on all this. He said in ten years picture a major city with eight lane highways. Four lanes for computer driven cars that are allowed to go 80 mph. and four lanes with operator driven cars that the max speed limit is 45 mph. The computer driven cars are considered safer so are allowed to drive faster. Which would you choose?

No, they'll keep insuring drivers, it'll just cost more.

Thing is, most insurance companies are more reasonable than traffic laws because they penalize bad results instead of behavior that may or may not be related to results down the road. I'd feel far safer with a driver doing 80 in a 60 who is actively watching what he's doing than with someone doing 50 in a 60 chattering on the phone in the left lane.

I'll have to be grandfathered in....with old busted cars that require manual operation.

That being said, I'm okay with some automation but only for long highway jaunts.

I think we see pilot-free passenger jets around the same time.
