How long should you work at a place if you plan to move.

I'm considering looking for a new job, however I don't want to be seen as a job hopper since I just started. Is working 6 to 8 months considered decent for a new grad?

Every 2 years you either need a promotion or a new job.

Move up or out.

Just depends on what's out there man. If you see an opportunity take it, chances are your current boss would do the same unless it's his/her business

If you just got the job, it may have a few areas that are not as great as you thought they were.

Stick it out and push past all that.

You will get to where you want to be by working hard and becoming someone your company NEEDS employed.

Just because you have some bumps in the road is not a need to jump ship.

Here's a tip.

Don't put Engineer 7 with DOTD on your resume as your first job out of college.

You can lie to people on here all you want, but you will never get a job with that lie on a resume.

How are you able to get up in the morning, get dressed and tie your shoes and function? Serious question.

Don't be one of those guys who work 3-4 months per job always looking for something better

You need to establish yourself

I'd follow up a short stint with something more substantial. I think my first engineering job fell just short of two years.

as I see it, anything less than a couple of years in any job is just hopping, unless there is some damn good reason. hell, you aren't worth what they are paying you until you have been there a year.

Stay at least 1 year. 2 is better. Show some stability before getting antsy.

It does seem that younger people have no qualms about changing jobs every year or two. I hire frequently and ask tough questions about why an applicant left a job after less than 5 years. It takes several years before you are able to add maximal value to a company so why would I want to invest in training if you are going to leave in a year or two?

30 years and a gold watch exists only in Fantasia. I've never heard of someone labeled as a job hopper.
