Now is flashing alternating green and yellow indicator light on side. WTF?
Not a big deal. They just didn’t reset the maintenance button. You can easily reset it yourself. When it asks if maintenance was performed on the menu just hit enter. It will go away. I did mine before the storm.

What 777 said.
I recommended to friends and family to change the oil 100-150 hours depending on how it looks, but 72-96 hours is probably better. And definitely give it a break once a day for at least an hour and check the oil color and level, topping off as necessary. Be careful not to overfill the oil though - check the oil at the end of the daily break so it has time to settle and you can get a proper measurement.
Also, it's a little counterintuitive, but it's easier for your generator to keep your AC running than it is to start your AC, so might as well keep the AC turned to a low temp.

yep
also if running air cooled....pull them covers off and put a fan or two blowing on that thing.
they are like a harley engine and get glowing red hot after a while. whatever you can do to keep it working.
prolly gonna make a main thread on air cooled generacs.

Same here. The guy told me to call them if it’s been close to 200 hours running and they’ll come out and change the oil. Now how in the hell are they gonna go around changing everyone’s oil after powers been out for a week. I’m planning to call but then do it myself if it goes that long.

I never thought about a fan. Thanks.

They are designed to run in the box with the access panels closed. Opening the access panels will disrupt the designed cooling air flow.
Unless something is not flowing correctly and it is overheating, I would recommend leaving it closed.

I have a couple portable ones and I don't think the oil has ever been changed.

Would it help if I put a fan on it with the box closed? Just trying to help that little baw all I can.

Initial break-in 25 hours and trust me it needs it, looks like shite. Bad enough I changed it again after the second 25 since then it’s been good. After that every 100 hours. You can get a 6 pack of filters and 3-5 qt jugs of oil for about $100, takes 10 minutes to change it. That’s 24 days at 100 hr changes
Make damn sure the oil cap is tight and it’s probably not a bad idea to shut it down every 24 and check the oil level and tighten it up

Generac in the title is confusing people. They’re leaders in whole-home generators but shipped a gazzilion portables to Louisiana stores.

are you saying to run my generator inside the shipment box that is came with? Have definitely never seen anyone doing that.

shut the generator down every day for a few hours. If you happen to be leaving the house for a while, shut it off.
Followed this advice and now it wont allow me to take the choke off or it kills.
I have no idea what Im doing, but I'm going to take apart the entire thing.

They are talking the big whole home generators, not your normal portable ones.

they also arent designed for Louisiana heat. Trust me i went 6 weeks without power after laura. leaving it closed = burnt circuit board on the stepping motor. Im sure its fine up north and I know its fine during colder months, but the so called cooling air flow doesnt work when its 90 degrees like it is here after hurricanes.
and ftr you dont know what you are talking about. the housing is specifically designed to dampen sound. it is insulated and tends to trap heat.
Im talking the generac whole home air cooled.

i was specifically talking air cooled who home. Are you talking about that or portable gas generator?

Darkness is an indication of oxidation only. The lubricity and anti wear additives don't wear out that fast.

Dude, just run the fricking thing. Theyre made to run. Check the oil everyday and change it if it needs it. You will be fine.
