How long before the world runs out of resources and humans die off?

When will the population finally exceed the resources on earth necessary to sustain all human life?
How will this play out? Survival of the fittest?
Who will be left standing and when?
What will it be like for our grandchildren when they are adults and their children?

People have been worrying about the "shortage" of resources for centuries now, and all that has actually happened is that more and more people are able to enjoy more and more goods and services.
Why? Because technological advancement allows for greater efficiency, a better ability to extract resources, and even using resources that were NOT PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT to be useful for productive ends.
All that graph shows, to me, is that more and more people in this world means a greater supply of labor to extract materials from the earth, from the seas, and from the air.

Also, the price of tin, copper, and other key natural resources are lower now than they were 30 years ago.
With the exception of gold, we have barely tapped the surface of the wealth of material that this earth has in its bosom and its heart.
A massive decline in population will mean mass starvation and collapse, because our incredible specialized economy wouldn't be able to sustain itself. And that is because the average person on earth produces far more than they consume.

There is only so much food to be extracted. However, other tech advances will likely produce reasonable amounts of food or "nutrients for survival" at some point in the future.

Humans are nothing if not adaptable. Whether we progress to the solar system and beyond, or revert to a more barbarian, Paleolithic mode of living, I have nothing but confidence in our ability to survive. I certainly hope for the former and not the latter, though it is not beyond conception that such events have already transpired.
