re: How Japan Has Virtually Eliminated Shooting Deaths

It's like an all white America which would be heaven for me.
Even in an all-white America, general acceptance of guns and availability for purchase would produce greater numbers of related homicides.
Well, you know what, I don't give a good goddamn frick. I'd rather have a heavily armed society that can act as a bulwark against tyranny, even with more gun deaths, as opposed to some pacified, boot-licking nation that is utterly at the whims of the only 'legitimate' users of force - agents of the state.

Did we ask them to disarm as well after WWII? Probably didn't want those imperialistic bastards manufacturing guns.

If only we could replace all firearms with THROWING STARS!!!

And how would the people overthrow their government should they come under the rule of tyrants?

quote:What is the role of guns in Japan, the developed world's least firearm-filled nation and perhaps its strictest controller? In 2008, the U.S. had over 12 thousand firearm-related homicides. All of Japan experienced only 11, fewer than were killed at the Aurora shooting alone. And that was a big year: 2006 saw an astounding two, and when that number jumped to 22 in 2007, it became a national scandal. By comparison, also in 2008, 587 Americans were killed just by guns that had discharged accidentally. Almost no one in Japan owns a gun. Most kinds are illegal, with onerous restrictions on buying and maintaining the few that are allowed. Even the country's infamous, mafia-like Yakuza tend to forgo guns; the few exceptions tend to become big national news stories. Japanese tourists who fire off a few rounds at the Royal Hawaiian Shooting Club would be breaking three separate laws back in Japan—one for holding a handgun, one for possessing unlicensed bullets, and another violation for firing them -- the first of which alone is punishable by one to ten years in jail. Handguns are forbidden absolutely. Small-caliber rifles have been illegal to buy, sell, or transfer since 1971. Anyone who owned a rifle before then is allowed to keep it, but their heirs are required to turn it over to the police once the owner dies. The only guns that Japanese citizens can legally buy and use are shotguns and air rifles, and it’s not easy to do. The process is detailed in David Kopel’s landmark study on Japanese gun control, published in the 1993 Asia Pacific Law Review, still cited as current. (Kopel, no left-wing loony, is a member of the National Rifle Association and once wrote in National Review that looser gun control laws could have stopped Adolf Hitler.) To get a gun in Japan, first, you have to attend an all-day class and pass a written test, which are held only once per month. You also must take and pass a shooting range class. Then, head over to a hospital for a mental test and drug test (Japan is unusual in that potential gun owners must affirmatively prove their mental fitness), which you’ll file with the police. Finally, pass a rigorous background check for any criminal record or association with criminal or extremist groups, and you will be the proud new owner of your shotgun or air rifle. Just don’t forget to provide police with documentation on the specific location of the gun in your home, as well as the ammo, both of which must be locked and stored separately. And remember to have the police inspect the gun once per year and to re-take the class and exam every three years.
That's dumb. But culturally the Japanese have historically been more compliant and orderly than most western societies (though the Germans give them a good run for their money). Americans are a different sort altogether.

It's a societal issue, not a weapons issue.
There have been times in history where crime has almost been wiped out.
I just read today. During the Mongol dynasty in the 1200s, there walkers over 100 crimes where the punishment was death. And only about 10 people were executed a year in a country of 100 million +. They also didn't believe in bodily punishment. But it worked for the
Under the reign of Catherine the Great; she ruled Russia for decades. And she completely abolished capital punishment. How did that work? There was a societal acceptance of following the law.
When I was I was in Spain, people lived without fear of crime. Not saying there's no crime there but there was nothing of the delinquent behavior we see in the US that justifies fear.

Do you even ninja or samurai, bro?

And in your brilliant observation, who is going to take away 300 million guns? Who is going to explain to the murderers that to fit your simplistic piece of shite narrative, that they need to stop breaking CURRENT LAWS and turn over their weapons.
The fairytale world you outright shitbags live in must be nice.
You blame the instrument, those who legally use said instrument but you refuse to actually blame the shitheel criminals and terrorists.
Go frick yourself.
Have a merry Christmas.

Japan is also perhaps the most collectivistic society on the planet.

Yeah, but have you ever watched their porn?

Non-compliance is far more effective than violent revolution. The USSR didn't fall because the people stormed the Kremlin - they simply stopped following orders. Hard to enforce authority if no one listens.

Freakonomics pointed how absurdly questionable their crime statistics are such that they are pretty much meaningless, and you're going to use this as a case study?

Perhaps you misunderstood me, Air Vice-Marshal. I wouldn't support any such policy here. We're an individualistic people who place much less faith in our government than do the Nipponese. I love guns and wouldn't trade mine in for anything. I'm sure the misunderstanding can be attributed to the intense Air Ops you endured during the last Great War.

You're the most anti American, Obama dick sucking poster on this board, with no desire to reason with anyone except your own blind leftist agenda. Go back to the political board and use your big boards so you make yourself feel better lol.
BTW nice one ripping on my military service.

Was watching a news show today, and they were harping on number of gun deaths. The guy that did the study, started discussing that 60% of deaths are suicide and 3% of gun deaths are accidental discharge. The host immediately went to a commercial. It really didn't fit the narrative of the day.
Oh, and of the remaining deaths, up to 80% of those deaths are gang/drug related.

Navy and I certainly don't meet eye-to-eye on a great many things, but this particular superlative is unwarranted.
