Correction, soul food was "invented" by african americans and is a staple of our culture. You're right in that part of the reason it exist is due to being poor so you make food with whats left over. But white people, in no offense, created it. There are however Native American influences in soul food. Not sure how but there is

And i'm pretty sure african americans have never said "Hey, we created fried chicken". Its just a food type commonly associated to our race. And a food type that's "treasured" in the south. Hence the term "Southern fried chicken".

Good try though.

No it wasn’t. It was just called “soul food” in Yankee land and associated with blacks up there. When it was common across all races in the south. Blacks may have coined the term “soul food” (although it’s more likely Yankees did) but not the cuisine.

Poor people invented what is today known as soul food, and acting like only one race had a hand in it is ignorant.

Except that they did.

“Hey we created fried chicken.”

Many ignorant people most definitely think this.

They should, because they did.

Black people invented fried chicken. That's why the stereotype exists.

Scots invented the frying process, though.

The food we know as Soul food is an amalgamation of Highland Scot immigrants and Native American cuisine. . .which began seeing Black influence after emancipation, because the poor Blacks lived right next to the poor Scots.

By the mid 20th century, the term "soul food" was coined. "Soul" had become an accepted placeholder for black. The new description of the food was appropriate, as white southern culture was becoming more metropolitan. . .and Blacks were the major purveyors of soul food.

Soul food means southern black food, but it originated with poor Scots.

All the people saying they can cook better than any black. . .bruh. I grew up around some old black women that could make a bicycle tire delicious.

ETA: Blacks invented Southern Fried Chicken, as we know it. . .with batter and such. Scots fried chicken plain

Anyone Saying that is quite ignorant. Some of the best barbecue man I have known have been all black guys with wooden shack’s and old iron smokers. And I knew some black women who could whip up the best batch of greens you’ve ever eaten.

But I’ve known white people that can do the same thing. The point being that no race has a monopoly on good cooking.

No they didn't.

They also didn't invent 'hot chicken' like what is served in Nashville etc. That was invented in Mexico and then brought through Texas and Arkansas into Tennessee. Yet black people are trying to claim that as well.

Yes, they did.

The Scots were the first to fry chicken, but it was plain.

Freed slaves were the first to combine it with cornmeal and make a batter to fry it in.

That is what we consider Southern Fried Chicken

Agreed

Still disagree on the Fried chicken part. Battered and fried foods had been around before that.

Now, some blacks may have come up with a certain recipe or style of batter, but not the concept itself

the batter was appropriated from the Native Americans, who had taken to using the Scot frying method to make a kind of biscuit-like thing.

The freed blacks learned the batter, and started using it on everything.

If I still had my old hard drive, I would post the paper I wrote on it years ago.

Soul food is one of the greatest cultural amalgamations of all time. Even moreso than beignets and spaghetti with meatballs

So much misinformation here. Let me guess black people also 'invented' cornbread? Most of the things that 'black' people try to claim as far as 'soul food' was actually either originally cooked by poor scots or irish here in the American South or was cooked in Mexico by native mexicans who brought it up through Texas and into Arkansas and over to Tennessee.

What is correct is the term 'soul food' was coined in the Northeast and not the south.

If you are trying to say they 'improved' on other peoples ideas and recipes than that isn't 'inventing' it either.

My white arse uncle who grew up dirt poor in Mississippi still cooks chitterlings every now and again, and they aren’t bad.

Why do people think they are only a black thing?

I've never run into a white person eating them and 3/4 of the black people I know gag a little when you bring them up.
