re: How has electricity service barely evolved from when I was a kid to today?

Where da hell is that wireless electricity? Elon needs to work on that.

I mean, electricity hasn’t really changed in nature since we discovered it.
If it ain’t broke…

Nikola Tesla tried to do wireless electricity but nobody believed in him in that regard

Because they’re government created monopolies with guaranteed profit margins and zero competition. What incentive do they have to innovate to improve reliability or efficiency?

Ding ding!

On that note, why do we still drive on roads and not have flying cars?
Because they would fly into the electrical lines!

Should have listened to Nikola Tesla and gone wireless power.

The airline industry is actually worse than what it was 50 years ago.

How else would suggest we move electrons more effectively.

You really think electricity hasn’t been innovative, improved reliability or efficiency in the last 40 years? Just a couple of things: overhead conductors have improved with the use of carbon fiber cores and more amperage in smaller, lighter conductors. Underground conductors have improved insulation methods from XLPE to EPR. Relaying is so much smarter and more efficient than old electromechanical. There are distribution control devices that can isolate line sections of a feeder to help locate faults. HV circuit breakers are using gas instead of oils for insulation that allows them to be much smaller, not to mention MV magnetic actuator breakers. Large power Transformer core design and materials are getting more efficient as well.

I think you just live in a shiatty area? We've lived in this north ATL burb for 14 years, and the power has never gone off long enough to require me to use our generator. The service here is mostly underground, which pays off when we have our ice/snow storms and limbs fall everywhere. They also do a good job of cutting trees back in areas where there are transmission lines.
My parents live in bumfrick, GA, and they lose power often when it storms.

It is shocking isn’t it.

Been living in my current home outside Breaux Bridge for almost 7 years. Lost power for less than 24 hours during one hurricane and less than hour hour when a car hit a pole.
Seven years and less than 24 hours of down time. Can't think of anything else with a higher uptime rate.

Wireless? Really? Don't work. Listen to tyson's explanation of why it don't work

REA in general was a huge lift that should not have been able to have been accomplished in the time it was.

The grid hasn’t been updated. Everyone creams in their pants because “muH eNerGy iN lOuISiAna is cHeaP” without realizing that your grid is likely one of the least upgraded. Even without these storms, any weather event (like let’s say an extended cold period for example) that puts people in the house, using ‘lectric, can’t even be sustained. That’s why Cleco had massive outages. You pay less for energy bc our utilities aren’t doing you any favors.
