How hard is it to DIY a trailer hitch?

U Haul just quoted me $400 for parts and installation for a trailer hitch. I’m looking to pull a 1500 pound pop up trailer.
Seems expensive to hook up a piece of metal and some wiring.

Vehicle type? Just find the instructions online and answer for yourself if you can handle it

The hitch is easy
Electrical can be tricky depending on vehicle.
$400 isnt crazy but can probably find a local place for $200-300

Buy one from Amazon and bolt it on. If you have to drill, just mark carefully. Most trucks these days have frames with predrilled holes and all of the hitch makers will build it to fit those. At least on mine it was that simple. You can speed it up with a good impact driver with a socket driver on it. Old school with a ratchet will work fine too, just make sure it is tight.

Get you a Reese hitch and make sure to leave the sticker on it

Shouldn’t be too hard for you to handle it
Just find a video on YouTube and get after it

What's your vehicle type? I helped a buddy install one on a Camry. He ordered it on Amazon (I think the brand was Kurt) and they had video instructions on installing on youtube. It took us a couple of hours but we were drinking.

This reads like a bad idea. A 1500 pound missile, rocketing off your vehicle backwards, when your DIY project fails?

If your vehicle's frame is predrilled for a trailer hitch, it is pretty simple.
U-Haul's parts are jacked up in price to start with.
What type vehicle are you using?

Do you have a pickup truck with a rearbumper cut out for a ball hitch? If so, you are about 20 bucks away, my friend.

Price out renting a GMC Canyon or similar. Depending on the length of your trip, you could probably go 5 or more days rental for 400. Lets be honest.. you'll NEVER use that hitch again.
