Depends on the configuration of the house. If the attic is open and you have a clear route from the existing ductwork to the room that you want to add, it is an absolute piece of cake and can be done in an hour. If the configuration is a bad one, they may have to use flex duct or do some really crazy shite to get the air piped into the room, though. Also, if your AC is already struggling to keep up, adding an extra room certainly won't help that.

If it’s too much trouble to add to existing try a mini split

How big is the addition?
What kind of attic space do you have?

Like others said, I can be as easy as connecting new duct work and running them to new vents. It can certainly get a bit more complicated depending on the situation.

Mini splits are useful also. Especially for a room that has attic space that is not easily accessible.

about as hard as adding an extra cylinder to your cars engine

hvac units are designed to fit the space you are using them in, they dont have "extra" capacity to "just add a room"

can you just add more vents and feel some cool air? yes, but your system will work its arse off to barely do the job and come august your whole house wont cool properly and at some point the compressor will fail from overheating.

get a larger system or just add a separate cooling system just for the extra room

Now you don’t know any of this. The size of his unit, the ceiling heights, the square footage of the climate controlled area of the house. You are just speculating. The rule of thumb is 400 sf of conditioned space per ton of air conditioning.

So now you’re an HVAC guy huh Pawlie? Should I say 500 sf?

It’s a school night so you should be in bed. And switch accounts over to Tigerbait08 really fast to respond.

You need to calm down.

There are physical limits and unit capacity limits.

Figure 400 square feet of living area per ton of available a/c cooling capacity (i.e., 2000 sqft for a 5-ton unit).

IF you have unused capacity in your unit (E.G., a 5 ton unit cooling a 1600 sqft home), and the additional square footage you want to cool does not exceed the 400:1 ratio, then you can add that conditioned space to your existing unit, assuming you can physically access the ductwork. Even then, you need to consider the duct size, and if the duct is reduced in diameter along it's length in order to maintain airstream velocity.

It's doubtful the original unit was oversized, since usually the contractor will not want to incur any additional expense, so you are probably out of luck.

Given the givens, you are probably best off installing a mini split unit. It's easier to power, easier to plumb, very energy and space efficient, and you will have an independent thermostat to control that room.

Hope this helps.

Careful bringing all that useful and logical information in here Stealthy.

The HVAC designers above you are in a frenzy. Paul Allen even opened his S alter since he was caught being a dumbass for the second thread of the evening.
