Ohtani has pitched his entire career unless he was coming back from an injury that prevented him from pitching. He had a sub 3 era and hit 55 homes runs in 2025.

Hell of a qualifier there.

He pitched 47 innings in 2025. That's like a middling reliever.

The qualifier here is that Ruth was not a dominant hitter while pitching at the same time. EVER. 4, 2, 11, and 29 HRs for Ruth when he was doing both. Highest HR total is only 3 more than Altuve hit last year who is now in the twilight of his career.

He had seven decisions his first two years, then 11 the next. He pitched full time for the next two, earning 15 and 10 wins, respectively.

In the '25 season you referenced, you prove my point, as he went 1-1 on the mound.

He has one decision this year coming back again, and in 50 ABs is hitting.265/3/8.

Put it all together, O has a lifetime average of .281 (sixty points less than Ruth), and has just forty wins in nine years.

Ruth also has MLB's highest WAR, triple that of O.

All right, I'm out, you guys do not have any convincing arguments in my opinion. Have a good weekend.

You seem caught up on how many decisions he has. He had 14 starts in 2025 while rehabbing from injury at the big league level. And hit 55 HRs.

Dodgers also were good enough to not need to push him deep in games either.

He also finished 4th in the cy young in 2022 when he was healthy. To say he’s never pitched and hit at the same time is a horrible take. He’s a unicorn. There’s never been anyone like him before.

Ruth was never a dominant hitter and pitcher at the same time.

He is the most talented player, ever. Not the greatest, though, for now.

He's 6'4 and incredibly strong and throws 100.

I do know someone who's been around him a few times with no cameras. He's a dick. Massive god complex. But, he is probably the most famous person in modern Japanese history.

Every player that wasn't a DH was a two way player. This is baseball, not football. Granted a starting pitcher obviously has more of an impact on the defensive side of the ball (once a week), but let's not act like other HOFers were sitting in the dugout scratching their arse all game.

There is an obvious difference you are missing here. Those guys you are referring to played every 5 days. Ohtani plays every game.

Ruth won twenty+ games three times with an ERA in that stretch between 1.78 and 2.01, so yes, he *was* an ace, and he has the highest career slugging percentage of all time. He was the first to hit 50 plus (59) in a year where no one else had more than around 20. That said, I like Ohtani and enjoy watching him play.

I’m not disagreeing with any of this Ruth was amazing and way above his counterparts, but impossible to throw raw stats out there without some context. Ruth did most of his pitching early on during the “dead ball” era. The average ERA was in the low to mid 2s. Then his hitting numbers increased significantly when they changed the balls and eras across the sport spiked like crazy. All that to say it’s an impossible argument to throw out just stats because they are incomparable

It depends on how you define being the greatest player of all time. In my opinion being the greatest is about your accomplishments relative to your era. The best player is just how good of a player you actually are. In my opinion Ohtani is the best player of all time, but probably not the greatest of all time at this point in his career.

Considering how it’s been 100 years since we had a player be dominant as both a hitter and a pitcher, pretty damn good.

And he can run the bases.

This is Roy Hobbs level of excellence. If he maintains it his entire career he’s in the discussion as greatest ever.

Doesn't the WAR stat account for era smoothing, and many other nuanced factors? Ruth's is the highest ever and three times Ohtani's.

The happenstance that he pitches when healthy, but then - wait for it - takes off his glove and becomes the DH, really doesn't move the needle considering he hits .281 career and has won 40 games in 9 years on the mound.

I like to watch him too but the best ever claim is wildly overstated IMO.

Have a good one.

Shohei - 165 Stolen bases/8 years in the league

Aaron Judge - 67/10 years

Ohtani is kinda better than him at that too.

I like Babe Ruth as an American icon. By all accounts it seems he was a free and fun-loving spirit. But yeah, I agree, those statistics need a lot of contextual factors added. For one, he wasn't playing against the large talent pool that Ohtani is, especially with Black and Hispanic players.
Then let's look at a percentage breakdown on those ERA numbers from 1918 and 1919, along with the two years Ohtani pitched the most while also hitting, 2022 and 2023.

ERA, Average MLB ERA, % better than League Average

Ruth 1918 - 2.22, 2.77, 19.9%
Ruth 1919 - 2.97, 3.07, 3.3%
Ohtani 2022 - 2.33, 3.96, 21.3%
Ohtani 2023 - 3.14, 4.33, 27.5%

Seeing an Ohtani start is the only MLB related item that’s come anywhere close to bucket list material and it’s on there firmly. As a casual sports fan, he’s in a tier of his own for my generation (eta: 39) imo.
